Where is OpenSuse headed??

Zirnov, I don’t agree. I think 11.2 is better in many areas. And its install succeeding is not “just lucky” if one considers those in the majority are not there because of “luck”. … for the majority of cases it does work well.

Thus far I have installed 11.2 on 4 different PCs with no problems:

  • 64-bit Intel Core i7 920 w/6GB (Asus P6T Deluxe V2 motherboard) w/ PCI-e nVidia GeForce GTX260 graphics [age-6 months]
  • 32-bit AMD Sempon-2600 w/1GB (Epox EP-8K7A motherboard) w/AGP ATI RV280 (Radeon-9200Pro) graphics [age-4 years]
  • 32-bit AMD Athlon-2800 w/2GB (Asus A7N8X Deluxe motherboard) w/ PCI nVidia GeForce 8400GS graphics [age-5 years]
  • 32-bit AMD Athlon-1100 w/1GB (MSI KT3 Ultra motherboard) w/AGP nVidia GeForce FX5200 graphics [age 9-years]

I still have 2 laptops where I could put 11.2 on (they are both running 11.1), but I am going to wait a bit:

  • 64-bit Dell Studio 1537, Intel P8400 w/4GB, w/ATI Radeon 3450HD graphics [age-1 year]
  • 32-bit Fujitsu-Simens Amilo 7400M w/1.256 GB w/Intel 1.5 celeron, and Intel i855 graphics (?) [age-5 years]

In particular, the last laptop, the 32-bit Fujitsu-Simens Amilo 7400M w/1.256 GB w/Intel 1.5 celeron, and Intel i855 graphics (?) [age-5 years]. My wife keeps it at the office, and yesterday she brought it home for the weekend, for the first time in 6 months. I booted 11.2 with a liveCD, and immediately noted problems with the liveCD (nothing installed yet). To make a long story short, the 2.6.31 kernel does not like the Intel 855GM graphic driver provided by Intel. Details here: Intel 855GM graphics problems w/openSUSE-11.2s 2.6.31 kernel - openSUSE Forums

I have found KDE-4.3.4 works BETTER for me than KDE-3.5.10 for what I do, so I wanted KDE-4.3.4 on that laptop. But that laptop has limited hard drive, and I did NOT want KDE3 on at the same time as KDE4. So I did a re-install of openSUSE-11.1 with KDE-4.3.2 from a community liveCD (replacing KDE-3.5.10 on that laptop) and then added a KDE-4.3.4 repository and updated the KDE to KDE-4.3.4. Its running great under openSUSE-11.1.

Now I could have installed openSUSE-11.2 on that laptop, but I did not want to compromise (by having to insert a special boot code, nor lose the special desktop effects). And I’ll continue to monitor the bug reports on the Intel 855GM with the 2.6.31 kernel, so that I can update to 11.2 on that laptop when the time comes.

In the mean time, I note openSUSE-11.2 worked well on 4 desktop PCs. So thats 4 out of 5 and I’m still happy with 11.2 (and 11.1 where it is more appropriate).
