It always fascinates me how an interest in for instance this mod will bring people together who may otherwise never have met. I also like to travel and ‘see the world’ as it may so geography is another one of my interest.
So let me begin by saying that I am from a town called Secunda in South Africa, our town’s claim to fame is that it houses the biggest coal to gas refinery plant in the world. It was only the second such plant to have been build (hence the name http://www.co8.org/forum/images/smilies/a_003.gif).
Our climate is moderate with Summers ranging from 20 degrees Celsius at night to 35 degrees Celsius during the day with thunderstorms every other afternoon while our winters ranges from -5 degrees Celsius at night to 25 degrees Celsius during the day but no rain in the winter.
It is basically the African savannah located 1700 meters above sea level. The town has a population of about 50 000 people including the surrounding areas which is mainly maize and cattle farming.
If it weren’t for the wondrous properties of coal and the alchemy involved in converting the coal to fuel this town never would have existed.
I’m from a town called Farroupilha, where the Farrapo’s war took place, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.
It’s a rather small town (not even 70k people) but yet it’s the 2nd most growing one in this State. It’s also the country’s knitted clothing capital and the biggest Kiwi and Grape production in the country (Me -taking the photo- and a friend, near a grape plantation). Also, it’s the Cradle of the Italian Immigration in this State, that took place in the 1800’s.
Although Brazil is known for it’s hot climates it is not the case where I live (South of the Country), where temperatures can reach -20 degrees Celsius in the Winter. It’s one of the most violent countries in the World, poverty and corruption are big, musical culture is going down along women’s image and media appeals.
I wouldn’t recommend anyone to come visit it (LOL) but I guess the chances of being killed here are not so big depending on the city you choose to visit… Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo are known for being violent, but some North-Eastern cities are among the most violent ones in the world (Maceió, for example). Since I live in a small town I don’t have to worry about violence so much.
Wow DenverD, couple of years and you will be able to touch the waves from your backdoor! You should perhaps start doing what the Dutch have done for ages and push back the sea (if you are not already doing it.)
The village of Merriott (the largest in Somerset) has been here a long time Merriott - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia and is our retirement location. So I’m not really “from” here. I was born in Hertfordshire, England 6 weeks before WW2 started but having a Dad in the RAF, spent many years moving around the world. It’s nice to settle down!
