So I am not a GNOME users, but the same underlining code runs the sound. If it did work and now it does not, might an update have stopped it from working? Have you installed a new video card or other hardware lately? Did you visit YaST / Hardware / Sound and see if your sound card is still there? Do you know what sound card/chipset that you have? I have a script file that can be helpful with sound issues here:
S.T.A.R.T. - SuSE Terminal Audio Reporting Tool
Thank You,
Update on sound problem: I went ahead and did a fresh install of 11.4 Gnome, and still no sound. Thanks in advance for any help…

If you run YaST / Hardware / Sound what is displayed there? Did you download the START bash script file? If so, run the alsa utility as root, to update and then as a normal user and post online results here.
Thank You,
Some of us have found that installing the application pavucontrol and then running pavucontrol (to better tune pulse audio) helps.
You could also provide output URL from running audio diagnostic script:
/usr/sbin/alsa-info.sh
and select the share/upload option, and post here the output URL/website address it gives to you to pass to those trying to help.
I had the same problem with KDE.
I went into the Yast sound settings, turned all volume settings up to 100%, did the test (it produced a sound). Saved the changes.
And, now it seems to be working. It is a bit weird.
Solved. Right clicked on the volume icon in taskbar>sound preferences>output. Switched from internal audio analog stereo to Soundblaster analog stereo…too simple. It wasn’t with 11.3.
Now how do I post this as solved?
Glad its working for you. Thanks for sharing your solution.
You just did.
SOLVED !
