When will Plasma 5 become the default KDE shell?

Since 13.2 will have 4.14.x as it’s release, it obviously won’t be until after 13.2 branches off.

However, does anyone know when/how the change will happen? I haven’t seen any discussions about it other than “not for 13.2”. Will Factory just naturally upgrade to the KF5/Plasma 5.x/Apps whatever version naturally, or will something have to be done manually?

I think it is probably going to be the first big “plumbing” change since Factory changed to rolling, so it will be interesting to see how it goes.

It’s taken me a few days to get my update from 4.13 to 4.14 functioning
correctly so I’m looking forward to having to switch to KDE5 with a
certain amount of trepidation. Why do KDE make stuff in one version
incompatible with the next? Somehow expect it with changes from 2.0 to
3.0 etc. but 4.13.to 4.14? Come on!

Well, KDE massively changed how they are doing software going forward. 4.14 is the last SC release. Going forward, KF5, Plasma Desktop, and Applications are all on separate release and update cycles. Which should lessen the pain of lots of things changing up at the same time. Of course the potential exists for lots of pain frequently.

It seems lots of FOSS software is going through lots of change right now. systemd and wayland/MIR are shaking things up. Ubuntu is in a huge flux as it migrates to MIR and Unity8/convergence. OpenSUSE and Fedora both completely altered their approaches to releasing. KDE just altered their whole setup with the migration to QT5.

And what kind of problems are you talking about?

I had absolutely no problems when upgrading from 4.13 to 4.14.

4.14 is definitely not “incompatible” to 4.13…

Well, I do not really know this, and I guess not even openSUSE’s KDE maintainers have a concrete plan yet regarding the migration to Plasma 5.
IMHO there should be some migration tool, that converts/migrates the configuration if possible (of the desktop in particular). Although that might be problematic, as not all plasmoids might be available, they might have been renamed/replaced, their config might have changed, and so on.

The KDE4 applications will likely just be replaced with their KF5 versions at some point (probably not all at the same point though).
The next KDE4 release in December will already include some KF5 applications (which ones has yet to be decided, depending on whether the port to KF5 is ready/stable already then).
So that’s maybe the time when the first KDE4 applications will get replaced by their KF5 version in Factory as well.

You should not even notice this though. They should just import their old settings AFAIK.
Not much different than an upgrade from, say, 4.13 to 4.14.
