I’ve used Ubuntu, Fedora 7-9 and OpenSUSE.
Eight hours a day I work in the IT field dealing with Windows. I found out about Linux a little over a year ago, but now the question I pose to myself and the forum is the following:
Why choose OpenSUSE over Fedora(Red Hat)on the desktop side or server side between the two. I want be a webmaster on that run Linux vice Windows. Basically the things I learn in Windows well training our find a way to do them in Linux but I need to make a decision. I was all for Fedora until I got news that SUSE was working with MS on the server side of things. Let me stop ranting on this issue. What do you all think.

I think both are good choices. My preference is SuSE and I just have to say
that it all began because of RedHat defaulting to GNOME. I just couldn’t
deal with it, and I still can’t to this day. I also recall being extremely
displeased with the way they made their ‘paid’ versus ‘free’ release. It
was just suddenly one day, oh you have to pay now to get updates…see ya.
It wasn’t till months later that Fedora sort of slowly rose from the
ashes…in the mean time I was gone, and off to SuSE land…which like 6
months later was bought by Novell. Kinda interesting anyway because I was
a Novell shop anyway. So really the fact that I’m a SuSE user had nothing
to do with being a Novell customer, it was just sort of fate. think the
Novell backing of SuSE is a good thing and if you are looking at enterprise
integration you probably owe it to yourself to at least look at Novell’s
enterprise offerings even if you decide to go with OpenSuSE, you at least
will have a working knowledge of things that could potentially help you
should you need a feature that Novell covers or if you want a slower less
edgy release cycle with a dedicated support staff. FWIW, I use OpenSuSE in
both server and desktop scenarios…but I also have three RHEL servers that
I am in charge of…although not my choice of OS, they work fine as
well.

A year ago? You didn’t get out much in that job I gather.

What I or we for that matter think isn’t really important. They are your
servers, so you have to make up your mind about what is the best
distribution for your job.
I use SUSE because I have done so for the past 6 or 7 years, and I feel
comfortable with they way it’s setup. For someone new maybe another
distro is easier to get along with, who knows?
Try a couple of live DVDs and make up your own mind.
RedHat started in the US and SUSE in Germany while Ubuntu comes from South Africa though the company that supports the server side is based in the Isle of Man. Each relates slightly different to the Linux community. For historical reasons each is stronger in different parts of the world. It’s up to you which you find easiest to work with.
My mind is made up.
I’m going to use both OpenSUSE and Fedora.
Ubuntu does to much hand holding for me.
Ubuntu is my first recommendation to people when I see people them using that resource hog named Vista.
I ran OpenSUSE on my Thinkpad T60 for two weeks (I like Gnome) and it was good. Only thing I didn’t like and couldn’t fix is the fact that anytime I’d play media the brightness of the screen would go all the way up for where I had set it. Searched for an answer for day.
With Fedora 9 I just had to rename one file and I don’t have that problem. I know that IBM has a great deal of support for Red Hat so I wasn’t surprised.
You’ll find there is a lot in common under the hood as anybody who works with Linux a lot can tell you so many of the skills are transferable. Things that are worth learning:
Get familiar with doing things with the CLI
Learn a powerful text editor
Understand the Unix/Linux account and process model
Understand file permissions
Understand regular expressions
Learn one or more scripting languages
Know where log files are
Know how to configure and compile a software package
Understand IP networking and the Unix/Linux API
Understand iptables

and some one push their keyboard to hard - i then decided to try another
distro, in case kde-3 is removed from openSuSE.
my first choice is Fedora (because the RedHat), even if i had bad
experience
with Fedora 7 & 8 installation (two times python error) before.
and the second choice is openBSD (no it’s not Linux).
Ubuntu ? not in this life.
Then i try Fedora 9, with Gnome of course. first day, good. second day, it
become gray. third day, my head feel like’s explode.
Here is the list why :
Gnome. Duh! one window for one folder ? no tab ?
SELinux. it keep’s poping up, popin up, and poping up. disgusting.
python. slow! and i think 40% of application there writen in python-gtk.
what a ?
package installation/management become messy.
i have a habit to keep the update in my local disk. so if any
accident happen or i got bored, i can reinstall the system and update
it without connect to the net.
and here is three thing why i choose openSuSE,
YaST.
SaX.
kde.
yes, i know it not a fair comparison. so what ? after 7 days i come back
to openSuSE again. rm -rf /home/src/fedora.
and if you worried about SuSE vs MS deal and feel uncomfortable about it,
don’t worry. it’s not that “stink”. i believe that people in SuSE/Novell
is not that stupid, as long as they don’t use Mono for YaST.
and for the record, i am 6 years SuSE solid user, and i hope it will still
continued even after kde-3 is removed.
