What's Going to Happen to OpenSuse?

Anyone know what OpenSuse’s future is now that Novell was bought out?

Right now we are coffee bean counting. When I have enough, I hand you some to grind up to make us 5 cups of dark roasted.

Business as usual

:D, that is good caf, and I’ll take one too, 2 cream and 1 sugar. :stuck_out_tongue:

Work continues with a new owner/sponsor…

Caf4926 is right. Only businness. Linux never dies.

The openSUSE community is moving forward.

There are more liveCDs than ever from the openSUSE community: Derivatives - openSUSE

There is the openSUSE community Evergreen project planned to address a user desire for a longer life openSUSE version: openSUSE:Evergreen - openSUSE

There is the openSUSE community Tumbleweed project planned to address a user desire for a rolling openSUSE Linux release: Tumbleweed - openSUSE

There is SuSE Studio Welcome to SUSE Studio , the OpenSUSE Build Service (OBS) https://build.opensuse.org/ , the Packman packagers are restructuring their repositories and improving their build service to make things better for users PackMan website , there is work ongoing to create a openSUSE foundation … etc …

Things are improving all the time …

A few guys at the office told me Novell being bought would be forcing me to switch to a new distro, I like this one, it’s great for both a mix of Office Work as well as home play (games, videos, music, etc…). Great to hear “The Team” is continuing. As for the beans, I’ll send you a can of Community, it’s the best

Which distro do those guys at the office use?

Attachmate’s CEO said that he’s looking forward to working with the
openSUSE project team.

There have been plenty of discussions in these forums about this already.

I do not know which “office” you mean, but do not believe them

They told me I’d have to switch to Windows 7 :frowning:

I’m the only one in the office using linux. I havn’t kept up with the forum nor the news as I’ve had my head buried in the “Sand” trying to get my MS cert for SQL 2008.

I prefer Linux to MS not for any reason other then I’m just used to and like how Linux and Gnome works. My productivity would slow way down switching to MS. My 1st linux experience was Fedora Core 4.
If I had to switch from OpenSuse I’d go with Mintlinux, it’s nice and has all the codec’s loaded already on it so it’ll be quick to get up and going, plus it has the same sort of menu that Suse uses (which I like).

Needless to say, in an All MS shop, I get a lot of grief for holding on to my linux box. In fact when ever somthing goes wrong me and linux are the 1st to be blamed.

I work for an MSP and mange the Kaseya servers as a main duty. After that I’m responsible for all the other products/vendors (kinda like a product manager, but Kaseya is my main responsiblity).

There’s absolutely no basis to that statement. Why do they think that?

When they are Windows users the more reason not to believe them. And especialy not when the subject is Computers!

It’s anybody’s guess.

Hope for the best, prepare for the worst and you’ll get somewhere in-between.

With the London Stock Exchange moving to SUSE (SLES) and IBM’s Jeapordy-winning server also running SLES, there is good news that SUSE may not be adversely effected, and thus openSUSE either.

Now there’s a surprise - not! Rise above it and don’t let 'em get you down. You are in a strong position for the future with those two linux distros, the one you like best plus a “parachute” that you may not even have to open.

Hoping for the best, I’d love to one or more of our customers request Open source infustructure. Currently our customer base only has 6 servers running some linux distro on it, I my self am running an old OpenSuse 10 for Cacti. I’ve had this argument/discussion with them time and time again, and the biggest thing that the majority come down to is the lack of intergration between all the different products like Office and email. I haven’t really used Suse outside of a stand alone PC other then my home network, but I’m only running a Samba as AD , print, and file sharing. SO I’m not able to really provide proof of concept to them on full intergration. I know I’m disappointed with RCP/HTTPS support for evloution for exchange 2007 and up, but other than that I’m really over joyed with My Suse Box.

it’s hard being the only linux guy in the room :frowning:

Good advice. In the meantime, however, let’s make some wild and unfounded predictions! It’ll be fun.

My “prediction”: the Geeko will be dethroned as mascot, only to be replaced by a ficus along with a slogan of “Dig deep, reach for the sky.” With our new mascot on board, green will still be used as the main color scheme, but an earthier, light brown will become the secondary color.

As far as i know, OpenSuse will stand on its own feed again. Like it was before. So this is perhaps for the better.

The future belongs to us.;)

Except when everybody ELSE is getting hit with the popular virus of the day and their systems keep getting shut down, or slooo o o w w down! Or how about when they are requesting money from the budget to buy some program that you get installed in 5 minutes with an open source equivalent from the repos? Or when they are stuck a few years from now with the same, unchanged desktop environment and you are able to explore your creative side even to go so far as switch to Xfce and remove over panel and desktop icon you have! See how long before they realize it IS booted up  !

Revel in your difference!
