OK. Now I’m really pissed. For years my elderly father had Windows XP running on his home computer. Lame, I know. I had driven to his house to fix it a few times. He would either get a virus or some malware had taken over. He always does **** I tell him not to do. Anyway, so a year ago his computer was taken over by some software that said his computer was locked by the FBI. If he didn’t send $200 bucks to some fraudulent account they weren’t gonna unlock it. Yeah…Right. This finally convinced him to let me do his upgrade. So I installed Linux Mint running KDE on his computer and promised him that his computer would not get taken over again. Dad liked it. I just had upgraded from Mint 14 to OpenSuse 12.3 because his power supply and motherboard crapped out. I figured I might as well put a nicer KDE based Linux on his machine. He got all of his bookmarks and email back. He was happy. So my dumbass brother just went over there and put Windows fricken 8 on it. My dad is not pleased and baffled by Metro. I hate it too. But my brother says it’s the latest and greatest Windows. Dad is 87 years old. He liked the way his computer ran. Now I gotta take another 3-1/2 hour one way fricken drive to get that POS off of his computer. What the heck!? It might have been nice if my brother has asked my dad if he wanted Windows 8. Geez. What gets into peoples minds?

Yeah not nice, I knew personally my mom would not like win 8 so I never wanted her to have a system with it on it.
I rather have her on Ubuntu using unity
Yes I totally said that lol!
And yes she does use Ubuntu 12.04 LTS on her system, she seems to like unity and has gotten used to it
I can’t think of anybody that has willing switched to Windows 8 by their own decision. Most people switched because somebody else left them under the impression they had no alternative. I actually think Windows 7 is decent. Sooner or later my father is going to cry out for an freedom from UI tyranny.
There are plenty of alternatives.
Windows 7 is still supported and you can get new registry codes for it or buy new disks offline.
Or go the linux route and try one of the *buntus, or openSUSE.
Personally I am really hyped for Mageia 3, I have my eye on that distro and am considering it a contender for install.
Hm, my advice would be that you and your brother each go for a diferent holiday destination.
I can see the headline: Family at war over Windows 8!
The same story may happen after many many years in my family too. I installed Linux on my bros machine but he erased it and switched back to MSWorks.
Well, my father finally tried to work with it. Saying he hated it would be an understatement. Dad lives alone 3-1/2 hours away from me. He asked if I could come back over and put things back the way they were. He uses his computer to keep himself connected to the world. It’s a good way of knowing he’s okay too. I guess I’ll have to drive back over there to undo this fiasco. I should make my brother at least pay for gas.
