What services/packages can I remove to speed up my computer?

I just installed openSUSE 11.3 and I’m certain there are services and apps running that I do not need. So I was wondering if anyone here can help me find some to remove.

My running services (“ps aux” - is there a better way to find the services running?):

YaST offers a runlevel-editor, maybe you should give it a try, as the respective services are explained. We can not know what services you need - for example I do not own any bluetooth devices, therefore I deactivated ‘bluez-coldplug’, but you might still need it.

By the way: the command ‘ps’ does not list services, but running processes. Quite a difference.

Those are packages and may or may not be a service.

Only you can say what services you need or do not need. In general service on Linux do not significantly slow a machine. If you want to see what is using CPU cycles run the top command from the command line. Or via menu - system-monitor-System Monitor for a GUI

And who is user 1000? You seem that have him running things, but having no username!

I also have the idea that user root is running KDE. If that is true you can wait for big problem in no time. The simple question of running the avahi deamon or not is realy peanuts compares with what you are doing (did allready) to your system.

Whoah! Why would that be? I just installed openSUSE 11.3 with all the defaults and the following:

  1. I am NOT an admin user (I’m logged in as a “regular” user account)
  2. My regular user account’s password is diff. from root

I only use root via sudo/su.

And yes, who is user 1000? I just installed so everything is as the openSUSE installer set it up.

1000 is the first user added to the system.

Only the UID not the user name is displayed in pa aux command

Root UID 1 does display as root.

Sorry I made you shiver. My fault. :shame:

I did not see how you generated the list because that statement is not part of your copied pasted computer text (I hate people telling what they do, they must show what they do).

I may be wrong about the root user having unneeded KDE processes also. There are one or two in my system, but not as much as in yours, but it still may be normal.

In any case, forget my post above, but my advice still is (conclusion from other posts above): try to realy understand the differences between:
. packages;
. directories, files (all sorts like configuration, executable binaries, executable scripts, etc.) belonging to packages;
. processes;
. running network services;
. start/stop scripts from /etc/.init.d and the whole complex around it including the concept of runlevels.

There might be a few services that are switched on by default and which you do not need and thus can be switch off. After all the default is a compromise between what any openSUSE starter (and maybe noob) miigh think that will run “out of the box” and security.
The use of YaST > System > System services (runlevel) will show the list. I switched off Avahi (for non zero network configuration, something you will not need when you do not have many MS systems in your LAN depending on it IIRC) and, as said above, sshd when you do not want to use it.

Ask for any of those in the list of you have any doubts (of course after googling and/or looking in Wikipedia).

Also, check if xinetd is running. When yes, check what it is serving there

And last, when you do

netstat -atlp

you will see what TCP ports are listening on your system. Same for UDP with

netstat -aulp

These may btw still be blocked by your Firewall.

OK, you might hate it but did you not see my sentence right before my pasted “code”?

I’d still like someone to help me understand why this is and whether there’s any issue here. Two questions I have for you:

  • Is your user (the one you log in with) an administrator?
  • Do they have the same password as root?

I do understand the difference between them. My point/question was simply based around the fact that whether they’re services, apps that were installed by packages that are set to run continually, or apps set to run at startup, they all have an effect on the speed and memory of my computer.

I would have seen it (and I promote this way of working because it gives the reader better information), but it was separated, that is what made me missing it. As said: MY FAULT.

Non of my users (including myself) is an administrator (meaning nobody ever logs in with the user root).
I hope no user has the same password as root has, but as I never tell them that password they could by accident choose the same one (very unlikely statisticaly), but as they do not tell me their passwords, I wouldn’t know.

Then I do not understand why you say that you think the output of* ps aux* shows services. Because it shows processes. Most of them do NOT run continualy, they are often sleeping, to be awakened by the kernel when a client knnocks at the port they are have registered for. You realy should not make too much of these things. They use not very much memory and can be swapped when not bussy, they do not use much cycles either as long as they are not doing any service. This is all very normal on any Unix/Linux system, so please get used to it.

As told earlier by someone else, use the

top

command when you want to see the impact of processes.

Switching off unneeded services is more of a security action then a performance action. And I allready told you where to look for those services and the same place for switching them off. But be carefull, do not cripple your system beyond repair.

Attaention! This is a text only system. No Desktop software or even X-windows is installed.
One user mgi is loged in (via ssh) and did su - to become root. Then a script was started. But when you substract these few processes the list is still impressive. Not that it has any impact on the performace of this small system.

netstat -tulpen

…since that’ll show both udp and tcp.

Thanks, but now what can I do with that info? Almost all the things listed have a PID/Program name of “-”.

That is because no program is using them at the moment. Only programs that are connected will show up.

Think of a telephone exchange with a bunch of numbers but only showing the people that are talking right now.

@gropiuskalle. As you reread my post #10 above you will se that I advice to do netstat -atlp as well as netstat -aulp whuch will give both TCP and UDP but in two separate bunches for better oversight.

@6tr6tr. I forgot to tell you to do this as root. This will give you more programnames.
