I am curious as to the “spoken/written” language our membership use on their computers? … ie … What is your current primary language for openSUSE computer activities ? [Note - you can select more than one item at a time]
I’m Dutch yet I prefer an English version of openSUSE… and any other application.
Always get lost in my native language as some things are so out of place when translated… anyone dutch actually using the gimp in Dutch? Everything is named in a way that I’m wondering what the hell the button does 90% of the time.
Installed the dutch version for my father on his laptop though, and he seems to have no problems with it so it’s a good thing there is a translation, freedom of choice is never a bad thing to have.
English. Now that is actually at least 5 different languages.
UK
Ireland
Southern Africa
Indian subcontinent
Australasia
North America
to mention 6
Even though I live in a country where Flemish and French are spoken, I use English for my SUSE. Reason is simple, I find both Flemish/Dutch and French to be ugly langauges
I sort of suspect asking on an English forum for the language of preference, is like asking a church choir if they sing hard rock music at church? or if they sing more conservative traditional hymns or chants at church? …
Presumably mostly users comfortable with English will be forum members, and hence that will bias the results.
Perhaps I should have asked instead what is the 1st (or primary) language of every user. … Makes me think I need to start another poll after this one is done.
Don’t think that’s necessarily true…
Even I were to use the Dutch version myself, this forum would be the first place I’d like for help. Can’t imagine there would be quite as big a community experienced with openSUSE in a non-english language.
Well perhaps the folks from India could pull it off? Seems opensource is quite popular there.
Aside from the fact that the forum members are in a sense self-selected for English, your result would be closer to (but still far from) accuracy if you had translated your poll into all the languages you specified. As it is, what you will get are:
English: means primary interface is English, or uses English interface because that’s what is most convenient for that person.
Any other language: means primary interface is this language, but also fluent enough in English to understand the poll.
I predict a 90+% skew in the results towards English.
+1
Sticking to English keeps things more to the point and makes finding/giving support easier…
Other than that I somehow like an English interface better than a Dutch one… more logical to find your way around as most systems I’ve worked with are based on English.
Agreed!
And typically of course - if we are English speaking, our custom is to make little or no effort to learn another language. (Exceptions accepted - I know). Myself, I really only speak English, though I am fluent in BSL - It can’t really be considered another language in this context.
Dutch being our native language I use dutch for my wifes and my uids. But as root I prefer english, it being the most consistent way in working with documentation etc.
I did not fully succeed in this. When I start YaST it seems to take the language from my uid (running the GUI) instead from root. I do understand mostly what YaST says to me in dutch, but it is very nasty to try to help someone on the forums, telling him (translating backwards into english) what he will see when using YaST.
I agree on this, but every install is in Dutch. (highest WAF factor;))
I sort of suspect asking on an English forum for the language of preference, is like asking a church choir if they sing hard rock music at church?
Well, if you’re asking at a good old fashioned Calvary Chapel, then the hard rock wins hands down.
I’m surprised at how far ahead English is currently (on this poll, not globally). I would think German would be a bit closer. Then again, there’s only a few votes so far.
I use english on my Desktop despite being Polish (although i got polish keyboard layout). If i would be using polish it would be sometimes difficult for me to know “wtf is going on” as i got used to english so much i wouldn’t be able to do anything in polish (Had the same thing when learning for Microsoft MCSE in english, friend of mine asked me to “fix” his computer in polish, I was almost completely lost )
I’m surprised too, but I think the poll question was not setup well.
After this poll is complete, I think I’ll have to come up with a better way of asking the question, and redo the poll.
English because, even if the translations are of very high quality compared to other open source (and certain commercial) software, you can still encounter some oddities when using another language… or your native language and English get mixed up. So for me it’s much easier and cleaner/clearer to just keep everything English.
My primary language is Kannada.
I use English for everything.
I voted “Spanish” and “Other”.
“Other” because I try to use Catalan often, but since there are way less translators for that, a full translation of the system takes a longer. So I end up using Spanish at least until a time has passed and the other translation is almost complete.
Since almost every doc/post I read is in English I find I know how a widget, panel or menu is called in English if I can’t directly translate it to english, what happens seldom, when needed in the forums.
I used serbian in gnome about a year ago and it has good support, but havent tried in KDE.
This thread made me think why is that, I have serbian in win.
Ill give it a go right now!
My mother language is Dutch but 99% of the time I install applications with English to practice and improve my English.
For my family and friends I always install Dutch applications, mainly because their English is not very well and they don’t have interest in improving it.
There appear to be a number of members on our forum who are fluent in Dutch and after this poll is complete, when I redo the poll, I am thinking I should include Dutch as a selectable option.
