I have a couple of TYAN workstations, one is 8 dual-core Opterons and the other is 8 quad-core opterons. They both have 32GB memory for doing really big numerical simulations. I know there are different 11.0 x86_64 kernels and I read that the standard kernel supports SMP. I’m not sure which kernel I should install on these machines. They seem a tad slow with the regular SMP kernel - is there an online guide for selecting?
Thanks!!

Oops! My bad - I just checked in YaST and see only one kernel listed - I must have been thinking of 10.2. So now the one kernel subsumes both SMP and BIGSMP?
The default 64-bit kernel works fine for my dual-Opteron machine with up to 14 Gb RAM (less right this second due to a DIMM going bad
). This has been under 10.2 and 11.0. I think the SMP / BIGSMP thing was for older and/or 32-bit machines.
I’m running mostly CPMD, what kind of work are you doing?
