I tried downloading Dansguard, I am having trouble installing it. Is there an easier or better blocker mechanism to block porn from my kids?
Will DansGuardian web content blocker work on single desktop not on network?
How is this done?
Dear ry2dssrt,
Yor second thread:
. is clearly about the same subject;
. does not contain any reference to the openSUSE version you use (where your other thread does say 12.3);
Thus I have combined the two threads to make it possible to have one consistent discussion.
But IMHO tthere must come forward more information from your side. You mention a product called Dansguard, bit give no reference whatsoever about what it is. You apperently thinks that at least a substantial number of users here on the forums use it. This is most probably not the case. You should at least provide a link to the product web-site.
You say you have "trouble installing it’. Now when you want any help with installing it, you better tell exactly what you did, what happened and what the problem is. The best is to copy/paste the commands you use and the output that shows then in between CODE tags in a post here (you get the CODE tags by clicking on the # button in the toolbar of the post editor).
Several people here made suggestions for alternatives. Why didn’t you take the trouble to answer them? At least you could tell that you did not understand what they say, ask for more information, or whatever. Just saying nothing to people who try to help you is not very nice.
I don’t know why; there is a version of ‘Dansguardian’ in the repo server proxy (for 12.3, anyway; and that server proxy should have a colon in the middle, but it, and the p, get interpreted as some kind of special character then).
Err, probably not, I’d guess…but it isn’t really a field of special expertise. however, I have some links for you (largely of the ‘making dansguardian work with X’ variety, where is X is something that I did have some interest in):

Honestly, I would think the easiest way would be to configure the computer to use opendns.
Easiest, but maybe not safest. Depending on network arch, kids ages, etc, etc, you could just be encouraging your kids to find ways around opendns. This may not be an issue if you think that allowing kids the promise of porn as a reward for learning network hacking skills is ok
More seriously, going down the Opendns route as a 'quick ‘n dirty’ fix now, while looking into getting ‘dansguardian’ working probably makes sense.
I am running an Ubuntu machine that acts as a transparent proxy server. Along with a DDWRT router that redirects all traffic to the proxy server.

You can set it up to filter all computers, tablets, and cell phones (anything that uses your internet connection) or just 1 computer.
Ubuntu has tons of How to’s on this, I am new to Open suse and have looked in the Suse forums but have come up empty.
click on “show unstable packages”
and it is available from two repos.
I installed from the proxy repo without problem on openSUSE 12.3
I didn’t try setting up or configuring anything with it though - I assume you know how to use it (because I don’t:) ).
