I’m using OpenSuse 11.1 which works well. I have some windows xp software (Cakewalk Sonar LE) that does not run in Wine :’(. Is there an easy way to run windows xp from within OpenSuse? I don’t want to spend $189 on VMWare as I can’t spare the money.
What is the easiest way to do this without having to be a linux terminal guru? :\
Virtual Box - it’s in the repos
Or use the one from here:
Downloads - VirtualBox
Instructions here:
VirtualBox Installation - openSUSE
You can use VMware Server for free. One of its functions is to behave just like VMware Workstation does. I use it to host windows 2000 for the apps I can’t get to run in openSUSE (and occasional versions of openSUSE for testing).
There’s a tutorial on it here: Install VMware server 2 in Suse / openSUSE 11 & USB support
I have 2 apps that need Windows. For them, I use XP inside a
VirtualBox VM and have no problems. One of them even needs access to a
USB port.

VMware is free (VMware Server)

Arguably creating virtual machines, no matter which hypervisor you
choose, is really a guru topic even if you use something like virtualbox
which tries to make it seem like you don’t need to understand anything.
Just my opinion.
I use VMware Server. Virtualbox gets high marks for being very GUI and
very friendly.
I have serious doubts about the ability to effectively use Sonar LE
under a VM environment… be sure to let us know how it all works out.

You might want to look at this too:

I will say VMware Server also, but I would suggest you download the older
1.x version.
I moved away from vmWare server just before 2.0 was to be released. I haven’t looked back at vmWare since, so I’ve been out of the loop on how it turned out. Back then there were a lot of complaints of the web based interface. Did vmWare press on with their direction despite all of the user complaints?
I’m using virtualbox, and I’ve been happy with it so far. You need the non-OSS version if you want USB support. Otherwise both are very similar in functionality.

They plunged headlong into the web based crap, which looks like where the
next version of YaST is headed. IMHO web based = %#$@.
VMware Server is all but stagnant at this point, doesn’t even appear on
their listed products on their homepage (at least not without clickage).
There doesn’t seem to be any commitment to it like there was with 1.x. I
assume they hope everyone will install ESXi, but that’s really limited
thinking. They have all but withdrawn themselves from the free desktop
virtualization market. Nobody in their right mind would use server 2 for
that. I mean it works, but the pi22 poor web interface that often crawls is
really ineffective even though promising ‘enterprise level’ capabilities.
Personally I use Workstation, it costs a bit but it does have some excellent
features and since I have VMware servers running I can port the images about
for serious production use.
