What is /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.27.23-0.1-trace - No GUI

Re-installed openSUSE 11.1 (KDE) on my desktop computer. Upon completing installation and reboot using the default, I was left in the command prompt without KDM.

Noticed that in grub’s menu, I’ve an option name Trace (below) and booting using this menu everything’s okay.

So what is the difference between the two and wny this weird grub menu? Didn’t have this menu during my first install.

In case someone ask , uname -a is

Linux regen 2.6.27.23-0.1-trace #1 SMP 2009-05-26 17:02:05 -0400 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Your X-server is not starting. I’ve got a couple of questions to help you get this fixed:

Which media did you use, preferably the full iso name?
Which graphic card?
Did you check the download and the media’s md5sum?
Can you post /etc/X11/xorg.conf?

Strange, but while in vmlinuz-2.6.27.23-0.1-trace, was playing around with YAST and clicked on the Online Update.

Though the Updater Applet does not indicate any updates available, there are actually 4 updates and when done updating, everything works normally now

Knurpht, thanks anyway.

By the way, believe I am safely assume that
vmlinuz-2.6.27.23-0.1-default is the “normal” choice

what actually is the purpose of
vmlinuz-2.6.27.23-0.1-trace ?
