What hardware RAID adaptors (vender models) are native in OpenSUSE 11.3

I need to know what hardware RAID adaptors are native in OpenSUSE if any. I currently have a Highpoint RocketRAID 2300 and an on board Intel Matrix Controller, but with the RocketRAID, after I configure a hardware RAID the OS doesn’t recognize it. It still sees the original members of the array if I don’t attempt to load the drivers. When I tried using the drivers provided by Highpoint it will not even see the drivers on the floppy or any other source I use, so I can’t get any farther. With the Intel Matrix controller, it at least recognizes the controller, but hangs at typing the hard drives once I configure the controller. So obviously niether of those two are native.

Does OpenSUSE not have any native RAID controllers. Ubunto can find both controllers, but I like OpenSUSE better and prefer using it, but if it doesn’t work I will be forced to use Ubunto.

I want to use hardware RAID because of it portability. I have not had much success remounting a software array from a crashed system where the hard drives were not affected.

Thanks for any assistance

You should consult this page : HCL:RAID - openSUSE

I have had very little success installing 11.3 on any hardware RAID controller. I want to use hardware RAID because of its portability, stability and performance. I have had OS corruption due to various reasons and tried to move the software RAID to a new build, but I could never get the new OS to see the old RAID array. It would see the individual drives and they all checked out okay, but would not see the RAID, thus all my data was gone. I had to restore from an old backup. I have not seen any RAID controllers that are compatible with 11.3 anywhere. Did they not include RAID controller support in this release?

One other note; this release also had major problems with an older SCSI controller that worked fine in older releases. 11.3 kept hanging at random places during the install and never finished. What is going on here; is OpenSUSE dropping support for all other controllers except for non-RAID SATA controllers?

I like the look, feel and stability of this release, but I can’t use it if it doesn’t support the hardware I need.

Sorry, I know nothing about either of those controllers. But aren’t they
both ‘fakeraid’ rather than true hardware RAID?

I use opensuse with 3ware controllers. Others say Areca is very good.

I used to think the same but I’m now persuaded that Linux MD software
RAID (mdadm) is at least as portable, reliable and fast.

I’ve never had any trouble but without specific details there’s no way
to comment …

this is a forum of users, trying to help other users…perhaps you
would do more good for yourself, and others, if you were to log the
bugs you find…certainly it IS a bug if 11.3 can’t ‘see’ a RAID
setup made by 11.2–did you log it?

if not, you should: http://en.opensuse.org/Submitting_Bug_Reports

but, just coming here to us users and complaining that you have little
success does nothing for us, or for you/openSUSE or open source…

and, did you also log that bug?

i can’t find where you asked in these fora for help in getting through
those random spots of difficulty–perhaps you could point those out
for me, thanks…

sounds like a GREAT question to ask the folks who make the decisions
on what is supported and what is not, what support is dropped and what
is not…but, those folks do NOT hang out around here…

you can, however, interact with them on their mail lists or IRC, the
bread crumbs to their door begin here:

use what works for you…if that is the “Ubunto” you mention in your
first post, then stick with it…i mean, i would not go though all
the problems you have had just for a distro which looks different…

(i’ve not heard of any problems with Ubuntu stability, so i guess it
must be a looks thing making you wanna be here…)

I have had no problems using LSI Logic RAID controllers in RAID 1 in openSUSE 11.3 x64 using the native mpt drivers/modules.
