what games can I play?

what games can I play on linux? I’ve heard you can’t play the same games on linux that you can on windows, is this correct?

if not, which ones can’t I play? Can I play all my zsnes rom games on linux? What about demos like call of duty world at war, and left 4 dead and battlefield bad company? Thanks

To be honest, I’m not even too familiar with windows games, since I know a lot of windows games aren’t the same as console games, and vice versa

Hello imachavel,

I’ve heard you can’t play the same games on linux that you can on windows, is this correct?
Your correct, you can’ t play windows games natively on Linux.
However there is a program that allows you to run some windows programs on Linux.
It’s called wine. You can see which applications are compatible with wine here.
The games you mentioned are probably too new for wine.

Can I play all my zsnes rom games on linux?
The website of zsnes says it runs on Linux. You can find zsnes in the software search.

And you can install wine through yast.

L4D run’s fine (aslong as Steam don’t mess it up) as does L4D2 since the last wine update that finally cleared the DRM problem, BF:BC as far as I know run’s with some quirk’s. The CoD series always ran and had really good result’s with Wine, I don’t know if that one does but CoD4 def run’s.

You can get most game’s to work in some sense, but it take’s a lot of time and patience, reading and more often than not writing :P.

You can mostly play any idSoft Quake Engine/Doom3 engine game out of the box (a lot also have Native linux binarys released a short while after the game Quake4/ET:QW/Doom3). Most of the Source engine game’s can be made to work quite well with Wine. Although don’t expect amazing result’s with some of them. The one’s that cause real “issues” are mainly the “Designed for Windows” game’s a lot of these rely far to heavily on DirectX and the latest advances (DX10/DX11).

Like the poster above said check out Wine. Also if your looking for a graphical front end to make thing’s easier to install check out PlayonLinux, the support for game’s isn’t all that bad. For commercial one’s if your willing to pay look at Codeweavers Cross Over Games, or Cedega.

Don’t be afraid to ask around here either, a few OpenSuse user’s are also gamer’s. We will try and help where and when we can.

Hey

Whilst i don’t know much about linux or software in general i have managed to play lots of games
I completely agree with everything said above except for “problems arise when playing games designated for windows” Whilst not wrong in any way, i have found that many windows games run better under wine than under new windows due to microsoft completely changing the coding (or something :S they did something different) in new OS’s like vista and 7 which means that games from early vista period and back play much better on wine that they do on 7. Better fps, better graphics, but yes the newer games reliant on dx 10 and 11 (although not so many of those yet)
It’s a two sided coin, but keep on using linux, ask your friends and family to take it for a test run and eventually more games will be made with first releases native to linux
sorry ranting a bit now.
Anyway, you could also try running games througha virtual machine with MS Windows installed (This creates a virtual computer inside your own computer and you can install what you like on it) there are a few downsides, 3d graphics are a bit hazy and you need in some way to acquire a windows license but all games work.
