I have become a new user of Suse recently: 36 hours. Haven’t given up
yet.
I was pleased by the idea of the Updater, this helpful thing sitting in
my taskbar that informs me of patches, updates and upgrades. And it can
install them all automatically! Wonderful.
Until it didn’t work so well anymore. After some 12 hours or so, it
told me there were about 7 or 8 updates. I approved them all and, 10
seconds later, that idle green icon changed to the red alert icon again.
I checked and it told me I should probably upgrade WebKitGtk and
fileshareset. Wait. Weren’t these two in that first batch of updates?
Whatever. I approve them again. 10 seconds later, the red alert is
calling my attention again. It’s WebKitGtk and fileshareset again.
So it’s been like that for 2 or 3 hours already. I approve their update
every half hour or so, but the alert won’t go away. Why is this little
bugger tugging at my sleeve over and over?
Whoa! ‘zypper dist-upgrade’ proposes like two hundred modifications (not
exaggerating) to my system and these two stubborn packages are not
mentioned. I rejected the upgrade.
And no, it didn’t give any clue why Updater is getting stuck.
I might as well disable this Updater app. It’s useless.

Frankly, I agree with you, and it has nothing to do with how well it works
(or doesn’t work)! I cannot imagine why anyone would want to give (by
default) a tool to update the system to every user! If they do not know
the su password, what good will it do them anyway?!?
Maybe it would make sense when logging in as root (for the foolish), but
even for my regular user account, I find the updater app annoying. From
the number of complaints I see about it, it would appear I am not alone.
The good news is it is easy to get rid of it - simply right click on the
icon and tell it to Quit. When it asks, tell it NOT to start up the next
time you login. Then, do it the right way - go into YaST and configure
automatic updates.

Both “update” and “dist-upgrade” will do a refresh for all repos
configured to do so (and that’s all of them by default). There is no
need for the manual refresh.
And “dist-upgrade” is supposed to be used to “Perform a distribution
upgrade”. It will do things you don’t want, like ignore the vendor of
the package. For normal use a “zypper -v up” makes more sense.

No, not useless…just out of sync.
Open YaST > Software > Online Update
and do the update there (select all updates it proposes for install
by putting a check mark in the little box). When done all should be
well. (And YOU [YaST Online Update] will be in sync as it should
be…and once again serving your needs.]
