What does "assign tags" is for in dolphin?

on my slowroll running plasma 6.7.4 right clicking on a file appear a new item
assign tags
what are these tags for?

Basic search

OK, had a fast read. But I miss a bit of the internals. Where are the tags and their associations stored? These things tend to grow, thus it might be interesting where it is.

( for general info )
Tags are NOT a “new item”. The screenshot I show below is from my Leap 15.6 install, which uses KDE 5.27.

KDE introduced Tags with KDE 4, back in 2008.
.

yes I remember now, but at that time I remember that wasn’t working

Tags are much better for taxanomy than hierarchical folders - which is why its widely adopted in applications and even libraries.

Ex. you could tag PDFs with their described content such as ebook, receipt. Even if these are scattered across multiple folders you could move them all at once by using tags as selection.

It gets much smarter once you can automate this - on some operating systems like macOS you can create rules that automatically apply certain tags to multiple conditions like filetype, matching words in filenames etc. automatically.

I have over 12k well-tagged entries of bookmarks/notes . It serves as work log, listening log, reading log - essentially self-writing documentation. One thing I discovered with tags is that the subconscious tends to recall the same tags as efficiently as it produces them - so the hit rate is like 98-99%.

You know the symptom of “oh I already read that page, but now I can’t find it in google” … This never happens to me, its 1-2 tags away.

manythanks, it seems very powerful, but I thought that it was something like a simple tag, for example I tag a movie as beautyfull and seen and a green and red dots appear on or beside the icon.
this tags are dolphin-related? (if I use another file browser or another pc they disappear)
are this tags filesystem-related? (if the files are in FAT or NTFS or EXT4)

If you scroll up to Reply #1, from @hui … they provide a link to an article that describes the use of Tags in Dolphin (no doubt provides answers).

I tried to use tags, on ntfs doesn’t works, it create tag but doesn’t show in all tags (that appeared only after I created tags in /home folder) but only in info panel and you have to refresh to see the tag just assigned and it doesn’t seem to works in “file” and thunar

…as it is a Plasma (dolphin) feature and no Gnome (file/thunar) feature…
