Don’t know if anyone here has tried torbutton (addon for firefox) but I’m having trouble getting it to work and I’m guessing it’s because I need other things installed/configured. Does anyone know what I need to get this to work?

You’ll have to have tor and polipo installed and configured, if you don’t already. When I last checked, torbutton wasn’t compatible with FF4 or higher.

I used Tor with polipo running on OpenSuSE 11.1 64bits.
It was very easy to install … just download the source code and run the make and install scripts.
Then I installed the Tor button plugin on the Older version of Firefox …it was the latest 3.x version.
After that I up-graded some boxes to the latest OpenSuSE 11.4.
Depending on what exactly you want to do, or more precisely depending on your use case it may be to your advantage to simply install the Bundle available in the torproject home page of tor Browser (Firefox Namoroka) + Vidalia.
in the case of Opensuse 11.4 64 bits it is:
Just unpack it and place it somewhere in your home folder.
Then make a simple application launcher.
Thats it!
Simple.
This is the Best solution as I think you only want to browse the web and not make any more complex use of the Tor network.
In this manner you keep your regular version of Firefox, the latest supported by OpenSuSE and also you get to navigate with the Tor Browser.
The Tor Browser (Namoroka) is Firefox optimized for anonimity and security online.

It’s not necessary to install tor from source. There’s an RPM repository on the Tor website, and you’ll also find it on Packman.

I still think the Best way for the use case I think was described, web surfing, is to go with the url I have posted, download the bundle, unpack and it’s done.
The link I provided is not source code, it is the Binary of the entire Bundle Tor + Namoroka + Vitália +etc .
It works on OpenSuSE and many other distros out of the box.
You do not have to compile nothing.
Installing the rpm installs tor and generates a lot of problems if the purpose is only web surfing …
The first problem is that the user must install polipo and also an older version of Firefox.
Then both tor and polipo must run as a service …
You do not have Vidália working …
Your plugin on the “regular” browser must be active … if you forgot to start tor or polipo service or to activate the tor button on an older version of FF … you navigate un-anonimously on all tab opened …
Even installing the TorButton plugin the user is never as anonymous and safe as with the custom build Namoroka Firefox based Browser.
That Browser as excellent plugin protection, cross-scripting warnings, warnings of direct-access files/chats or other connections etc etc …
Also Vidália is immediately available which makes changing user identity and many other things a matter of a button click, that is not possible with only installing the tor Button on FF …
And so many more things to consider …
So I strongly suggest for the case of web browsing only the fastest and best approach … go to the download web page of Tor Project, download and unpack the Bundle.
And that’s it.
Simple and effective.
You have a self contained solution for your anonymous browsing, that is safe, simple to install, contained, does not mess your Firefox installs, and is readily available at a single mouse click.
Simple, affective, fast.
I also argue that you can not have a Firefox setup like the one on Namoroka.
It is all there for the user.
The other scenario:
If someone wants to make a Tor node and play with the Tor network or any other complex use/study/development of the Tor network … then just install the rpm, or compile from source , they both work…
