What comes preinstalled?

Hello. I’m not exactly new to Linux but I’m new to Suse. So I was wondering if I can choose what desktop environment is installed with the DVD.

You get the choice of KDE4, KDE3, GNOME or other. And they are not mutually exclusive, you can install multiple environments.

So there’s a window in the installer where I get to choose. Also is there a comparision page? Sortof like “Why you should use openSUSE instead of {Insert other Linux Distro}”.

It’s one of the steps in the installation.

Who needs comparisons? It’s da best. But seriously if you do a search of the forums, I’m sure you’ll find threads where people have asked this question before. Maybe in the soapbox forum.

Fair enough. I’ll set up a Virtual Machine and try it.

There is also a Live CD which can also install. But you have to choose your DE flavour to get the right CD. Note that the KDE Live CD is KDE4. If you want KDE3, someone has done a remastered KDE3 Live CD, should be possible to find with a search, or someone else is sure to pipe in with the link.

Or a LiveCD/DVD. With certain types of distros (the major ones in your
case) meaning the ones that are made for that which interests you (ease
of use, functionality, reliability, general use stuff) you are probably
safe w/OpenSUSE, Fedora, or Ubuntu (or one of the distros based on
them). What you choose is likely going to be a factor of how you use
your computer, which you use first and therefore know best, and your
first impressions of each. I know people who use all of these and swear
by them. Assuming they are not all wrong Linux is reaching that point
where it’s a matter of taste. Thankfully there is no shortage of tastes
(people’s preferences) out there or flavors (distributions) to gratify
those tastes.

Good luck.

There is a Website ( or maybe even more) that I cannot remember the name of at the moment that will just ask you a few questions and it will pick out a few different Linux distros for you to choose from that way it will shorten your choices

Yeah I remember that site. I’ll do a search and post the link if I find it.

[Edit]I found this one: polishlinux.org » Distro chooser but that one wasn’t the first one I found.

[Edit #2] Whoa how’d the forum know what the name of the site was?

[Edit #3] I found the first one I found, it may be the one you were talking about: zegenie Studios Linux Distribution Chooser
