Can anyone explain, or point me to docs that explain this?
thanks.

It partly depends on whether you are talking about a CD or a DVD. In both cases, the Linux kernel which was loaded from the disk to perform the install is shut down and the kernel you have installed on your hard disk is booted. A number of scripts are then run to make sure that all the files that control the boot process, select the desktop and let you login are in place for your next boot. As only some of the necessary programs can be included on the CD, the next thing you must do on the first reboot after a CD install is install the files that are missing for a minimal desktop experience.
Thanks for the reply, this then explains how someone can boot a liveCD and have everything working well, but on reboot after initial install have major problems.
I am guessing then that there is no easy way to ensure that the kernel modules, settings etc that are installed are identical to those setup by the liveCD hardware detection process. I also assume the same is true for xorg configuration.
The case in question involves a system that runs well from liveCD with desktop effects etc, however with each install method used has major issues, apparently with xorg and/or video driver modules. Any suggestions on how to get the install to use the hardware detection from the liveCD would be appreciated. Thanks.
Other suggestions on how to go about this also much appreciated.
