What are patterns? Different from Packages Groups?

What are patterns? What’s the difference between “Package Groups” and “Patterns”?

What is the pattern: “patterns-opensuse-dvd”?

Thank you.

Environment:
OpenSuSE 11.2 64-bit (Intel® Core™ i7, Intel® Desktop Board DP55WB - P55 Express Chipset)
Default distribution repositories, as installed.

Groups are based on functionality, for example network servers are under one group, development tools under another and so on.

A pattern is a set of packages that cut across various groups to provide a commonly used scenario, for example LAMP, which would pull in a web server, PHP interpreter, MySQL server and any required libraries.

Sorry, don’t know about patterns-opensuse-dvd, maybe it’s a package with a list of common patterns? Have a look at the package contents to find out maybe?

Package Groups
Does the OpenSuSE Team build “Package Groups”? I do not have a “Development” “Package Group”. Does anyone?

I have the most current OpenSuSE installed, 11.2, on a brand new machine.

Pattern
Ok. I think Package Groups work better for me because I can control what gets installed.

If I click on the “Search” tab and search for strings that “Begins with” “patterns”, a number of items are displayed in the list. I wonder if there is a relationship to what is checked/installed and what is displayed on the “Patterns” tab page. HHHmmm…

**patterns-opensuse-dvd, **
I added the community repository packman and found all the dvd and multimedia packages I use (dvd-slideshow, mandvd, dvdstyler, sox, lame ffmpeg…).
