WEP Difficulties

Even though I am not new to Suse, I am still very inexperienced, especially when it comes to wireless. I am running Suse Linux 11.3 and I am having problems connecting to my wireless. My network controller is a RaLink RT2500 802.11g Cardbus/mini-PCI (rev 01). I am recieving a signal from my wireless router, however when I try to connect to my ESSID via KnetworkManager It asks for a WEP key. After entering the key, Knetnetwork manager will try to connect for a minute or so and then it will ask for my WEP key again. It keeps repeating this cycle without ceasing.

Any help on how to configure the WEP so that Knetwork manager will connect or a way around WEP would be much appreciated.

Are you using KDE or GNOME? If KDE, are you using NetworkManager or ifup? If NetworkManager and KDE, are you running Kwallet? Has this wireless connection ever worked for you? According to this page, it should work, but it depends on the exact model which I do not know:

Sorry, I am using KDE and KnetworkManager, I am also using Kwallet (KnetworkManager asks for my Kwallet password every time after I reboot). It has worked before which is why I think it is a configuration issue and not hardware.

So, if you use openSUSE 11.3, KDE, KNETWORKMANAGER, KWALLET and your networking has worked before, it might be you need to clear out your previous settings and start over again. I have a script you can use to do this. It also clears out KWallet, so if you use it for anything else or don’t remember a password in it, you need to retrieve it before running the following script file you can find here:

knetfix - Version 1.00 -KDE KNetworkManager Fix for Wireless Connection Problems

Thanks a lot, its working know. All I had to do was follow the section in your post, so just resetting the Kwallet fixed it. I didn’t need to make Knetfix.
