Weird problem with Banshee and MP3 files

OpenSuSE 11.2, patched up to date.

I have a weird problem with Banshee and a few of the mp3 files in my
collection. It doesn’t error, it “plays” them, but no sound comes out.
These are mp3s that I know are good (they play fine on my iPod, for
example, and previously have played fine using Amorok and some Windows
based players). My initial thought was that the files were maybe damaged,
but they play ok elsewhere. Then, as a test, I opened one of them using
Audacity, which plays it fine. Stranger still, after doing that, Banshee
will also play that particular one fine until I open another one of them
in Audacity, or reboot.

So, as crazy as it sounds, take four mp3 files:

1.mp3 - this one plays ok
2.mp3 - this one “plays” silently
3.mp3 - this one “plays” silently
4.mp3 - this one plays ok

In Banshee, play these four files. Two will play fine. The other two will
appear to play, but you won’t hear anything.

Now open 2.mp3 with Audacity. Close it. No changes saved, nothing on disk
changes.

In Banshee, 2.mp3 will now play fine. 3.mp3 still will not play.

Now open 3.mp3 in Audacity. Close it. No changes saved, nothing changes
on disk here.

In Banshee, now 2.mp3 is back to “silent” and 3.mp3 will play fine.

I have no explanation for this that makes any sense. Anybody got any
other ideas on how to figure out what’s going on here? These are all
freely distributable files, I be happy to provide copies to anybody that
wants to try them to see what happens on their machine.

No that is positively baffling. I promise to ponder it but I don’t think I will come up with anything.

Just to be clear
If you re-boot and immediately try the silent files in Banshee, do they work OK?

No, they don’t work then either. Only after first being opened in
Audacity.

Yeah, weird, isn’t it?
