Hello to everyone,
I have a serious problem here. I am using a VRS for ftp operations. I have bought it with OpenSuSe 11.3 installed without any Control Panel installed. I have used NX and installed IceWM as windows manager. It works really great. Then system wanted me to upgrade. I did so. After upgrade to 11.4, my programs screwed up. They don’t show any text at all but squares instead. I have tried everything i know to fix this but i could not manage to repair it. Could someone please help me? Only some programs do that annoying character problem. I have given 4 pics below to help a bit more to solution of my problem.
My VRS has 512mb RAM , OpenSuse 11.4 (32-Bit) and has no control panel. I use yast through SSH Telnet client (Putty). I add some screenshots to help a bit for solution.
I have done nothing experimental, dear moderator. I have just re-installed IceWM, Re-installed all the truetype fonts and I have re-installed GTK+ fonts. I have not used any specific fonts. I am a novice user on Linux. So, I have applied some font fixation methods I read in the opensuse forums. I have no option like re-installing the VRS because my provider doesnt give me support for the VRS pack I paid I have mailed to them about this problem but they didnt reply me positive they said me that it is one-time installation and no mail/online support for program installation/uninstallation So, i have to face off with this problem with my own effort by searching on net and forums of OS I have. My first WM was XFCE. It killed my VRs performance and used too much memory. Because of that reason, I uninstalled it and installed IceWM. I liked IceWM because it is very simple to use and very friendly about memory usage. But this font subject really made me sad and scared. I have never used special fonts or themed fonts. I always stick to system default fonts pre/post- installation. I hope i didnt do any serious damage to my poor OS :’(
The weird thing is that Only GIMP and some other programs do that but not all of them. LibreOffice works great for example. I really appreciate for your help. Thank you very much.

what is a VRS anyway?
sounds like you made a bad purchase…you don’t know how to use what you
bought, and your initial post sounds like you had the chance to purchase
a “control panel” but declined that…
and, now you are trying to learn how to control it…right?

VRP (Known as VPS [Virtual Private Server] also) =The array of VRS-servers closes the gap between conventional webhosting and dedicated servers. On Webhosting, also named Share Hosting, you get assigned memory capacity on a physical machine. In theory several thousands of such hosting accounts may do their work on such a machine.
Yes, i made a bad purchase in appearance but it was the most economic solution for my condition. I am a student and my economy is not good enough to rent a Dedicated Server or pay 20$/monthly fee. I have been used Windows OS all the time. But when i have seen the effort of people and Open Source community, i have wanted to be a part of it. No matter how big part I am in such a large scale community. Maybe I can be a drop in an ocean. Even this is a great thing for a student. I know what i bought and how to configure it. I did this before for Windows OS so many times. I have never used a Control Panel before. Because we can say that this is my first time out of shell. I have installed everything according to my notes I gathered on the net. I have installed my First WM (XFCE) and it worked like a charm. BUT it consumed too much memory (my VRS has 512 MB ram only). So, i uninstalled it. After that my problems popped up. I installed another WM (much more lighweight one according to comments on the net). It worked fine until I start some applications on it like Transmission or GIMP. They have given font problems to me. IceWM still works great for me and my FTP Server works well. But I cant use my other applications. This is my problem. I sure am there are another people over on the world as me. And they can use this forum thread for their problems on suse linux and they can love it and use it.
I am using SolidWorks and such applications for CAD design. Because of this reason, I am depended to Windows OS. But on my free will of choice, i want to learn and use linux because of its philosophy. I hope, this explains my situation much more better than before. If i knew linux deeply, i could solve my problem myself. But I have no such a big knowledge, sorry. I have no option like paying 10$/monthly fee for control panel. I am not rich that much.

with only 512 MB RAM what kind of other “applications” do you intend to
run on your server?
certainly i can’t offhand think of any which will require a GUI…
absolutely, there is NO need for either a window manager or even an
X-window system to be running on your openSUSE for there to be a really
great FTP server humming along…
same for a web server running Apache…do not try to do the html pages
on the VRS…instead do that locally and then upload the results via FTP…
instead of using a Graphial User Interface (GUI) to administer the
server, use the Command Line Interface (CLI, or shell, or BASH) which
works great…it is VERY low in RAM usage and is all you need…you just
have to learn how to use it…
the $10 a month “control panel” is nothing but a GUI front end for the CLI…
or, have a look at WebMin <http://www.webmin.com/> you may be able to
install it on your VRS and it may do what you need for $0 per month.

I have similar concerns as DenverD. A web server is not a place where you
should run programs like gimp or desktop environments like xfce.
If you want to use such programs, do it on a local machine. You can setup a
virtual box with a linux in it on your local machine if you do not want to
mess with your main system.
Total cost: zero.
And let the web server do what it is supposed to do.
By the way you reduce the safety of your server by running a gui on it.

1-) This is not a WEB SERVER to host a website.
2-) I use this server for myself to complete my download tasks (P2P), some small jobs (like editing text files or cropping small sized jpeg files).
3-) Only my some friends (up to 10 user) have permission to access to my FTP server (Just for downloading files I have added to my download list for them).
4-) I am not a computer guru. Take me as a novice user.
5-) I am here to find answer for my font problem on GUI. If you can help me about it , i appreciate.
6-) If one day I decide to become Intermediate user or Professional user, I go and take training about IT area.
7-) I know what virtualization is and such programs like VMWare, Virtuozzo, etc. I don’t want to use linux on my local. I like using it on remote. If it was on my local, you can be sure of that i had reinstalled it already by now.
9-) Thank you for Control Panel suggestion. I will install and use WebMin as soon as I solve this font problem.
10-) I use VPS because my school’s network doesn’t let me use P2P programs like Transmission or aMule. So, I download files on VPS and then Download them to my computer from VPS by using FTP.
Now, could you please help me to fix that font problem please? It is really annoying.

i would not know how to begin…
it is as easily a NX problem as it is an openSUSE problem…
how did you ‘upgrade’ from 11.3 to 11.4? did you use any of the
supported methods?
probably easiest way to get back to a working system is to go back to
11.3, and the easiest way to do that is to just restore your last
pre-upgrade backup.

take a deep breath
(I thought the same)
@lynxalpha
I would first check the obvious. Did you install all the fonts you need?
In many cases it will help if you install the msttf-fonts
zypper in pullin-msttf-fonts
as root. This will install the standard truetype fonts like arial and so on.
I have not the simplest idea if that will help, you are the only person who
knows what you did and what you installed on that system.
Running p2p software (which has several open ports to the rest of the world)
gui + standard gui applications which are made for a local end user on
your hosted server (however you call it, this is what it is) is an
invitation for every one to crack it.

Squares usually mean that the character set you are using does not
contain the character in the text that is being displayed. Perhaps the
fonts are corrupt. So for starters:
What does xlsfonts report?
What font is gimp using for its titles, menus etc?
