Im Rusty
I hope this post is in the right place so here goes
I am running Suse Linux and was in the cli using Vsphere doing a search for a file i missplaced half way through the search it stopped the search and ever since then the cli has loads of weird looking charaters ie lines and arrows I can still use it but i have to kinda guess were i am as i can only just make out what folder im in.
Example if I press the letter .(full stop) i get a arrow pointing down and if i press f it shows as a little circle.
Thought it was something wrong with my machine so i logged in using another pc and it was the same. Is there a way to reset the cli window itself or reset to default or something.
Any help would be greatfully appreciated.
Regards
Rusty
Please there are a few things unclear from your post.
First, you talk about “Suse Linux”. Now these are the openSUSE forums. If you mean that you use openSUSE, then please also tell which version you have. We can not guess that. When you mean with “Suse Linux” that you use SUSE LInux Enterprise (SLES/SLED), then you are on the wrong forums and you should go to https://forums.suse.com/
Then, when you are using openSUSE, please take note that we can not look over your shoulder. We can only see what you see if you copy/post things from the CLI here in a post. So please show us those strange characters.
And, why we are at it, please copy/paste computer output in a post always between CODE tags. You get the CODE tags by clicking on the # button in the tool bar of the post editor.

Normally when you get strange characters in the terminal window it is
because you have done something like ‘cat some-binary-file’ and the file
contained some sequences that changed the character set within the terminal.
The way to fix that problem is to type ‘reset’ into the terminal,
probably followed by ‘clear’. Or you can just close the terminal
entirely and open a new one.

The problem I described only affects one particular terminal window. If
you login from another machine, it would be fine. It sounds like you may
have corrupted something within your system, but I don’t know what or
how. A more detailed description and/or some pictures might help.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read my post. I used the reset command you suggested and it worked.!!!
Im so chuffed thought i broke the thing ( it was a work machine)
Really appreciate the help.

That’s great, and thanks for letting us know. Now we’re happy too
