I recently installed OpenSuSE 11.4 including WebYast base system with all available modules. Status shows everything works fine. But the update module has some problems. It displays 21 updates, three of them security and 18 important. By clicking on any of the install buttons the mesages say please wait and then updating while the update time depends on the size of the file. It finishes and goes back to the list of updates without any error message. But after that never shows up any changes or messages that the update has actually installed. Since about ten days the list always remains the same. What goes wrong? Thanks for any help.
Not sure what might be the problem but if there are any updates that require manual action or selection, the update applet can not get past this issue. So do the following:
YaST / Software / Software Management / Select Package (at the top pull down menu) / All Packages / **Update if Newer Version Available **and press the Continue button if requested. Press the Accept button on the bottom right of the screen. If you have to make choices between packages, here is some advice to use.
To avoid package problems, the most important thing to do is to: NEVER
ignore a dependency, even if YaST/zypper/updater gives you such an option!
In general, never switch to an >inferior< architecture and the solution is
most often to just switch Vendor to the >Packman< repository. So changing
the vendor is OK, but >ignoring< dependencies is never a very good idea!

I’m sorry I didn’t answer yet. Had a surgical ‘eye repair’ yesterday and looking to the screen with one I left isn’t really exciting. Now I am ok again. Thanks for the post anyway. I’ll think about your proposals and try some steps. Will let you know the results. I absolutely agree that ignoring dependencies is an NOGO. Such an option should never appear.
You mentioned ‘11.4 is out’ and it would be time to upgrade to a winner. But what is the winner?

yauser, sorry to hear about your eye surgery. What ever you do, don’t mess around the computer when you should be resting your eyes. I had major surgery this summer and I spent way too much time in front of my computer. When you are off, you are supposed to be resting. SO rest already! lol!

James, thanks for the good wishes. I am all right. I agree when it is time to rest one should relax. But don’t worry. My so called ‘eye repair’ was rather a very positive experience. March 22nd they changed the natural lense at the right eye for an implanted artificial one and March 29th the one at the left eye was fixed the same way. My sight since then is amazing. Every character on the screen is now clear and bright. Luckily I wont have to rest extensively and I’ll show up with results pretty soon. As I have seen some views on this post I guess people will observe what will happen. I’ll keep you updated.

PS: I am glad about the 11.4 winner opinion. Because I have to invest a lot of time to learn more about the OS. A growing amount of app servers in the near future will be to admin and develop for sure. My blog is also running on one of them.
zypper update * made all the necessary steps at the console. After completing I logged into webyast and status said ‘your system is up to date’ and ‘healthy’. That means webyast works correctly. Only installing of updates via webyast don’t work yet. I’ll observe next announcements of updates if it works by then.*
