Webcams

Which webcams do you use?
I am in for buying one of these devices and hope to get it running with skype.
Are all good, or are there some that are really good (compatible) with linux. Or does it even matter. This will be the first time i buy one of these webcams.

Thanks for the help.

I am using logitech and hp both are functioning satisfactorily

I’ve got a Logitech Chat and a Clique Hue and both work fine. The Hue
took a little work to get working because the default driver in 11.2 is
broken, but there’s a newer driver that works well.

Are those regular or high resolution? I have DSL (Elite)
I take all the advises and will go shopping soon. Just have to convert my parents to use it too.:\

Maybe you can buy one if it doesn’t work go back to the store and replace it with another til you’ve got the right one;) Just don’t lost the receipt.

True. But if i can avoid that i am more happy. Its just, i never had a cam and so i just want to make sure.
Btw. i bought some while ago a Logitech wireless mouse. Works great. So perhaps it should be working also with the webcam.

The chat was a low res camera; the Hue does 640x480 (which it says is
high resolution). The Hue includes a microphone as well.

The one thing I found with Logitech was to avoid the QuickCam Pro with
the dark focus ring. I’ve got one of those as well, and DIVIO (the
makers of the CCR) refuses to release a spec. There was a driver
developed using USB reverse-engineering, but I never got it to work very
well and development stopped a few years ago AFAIK.

I am using a TV tuner with a composite input and a composite output video camera. This old TV tuner has been recognized by Linux forever.

I have the Logitech QuickCam Pro:

Bus 002 Device 005: ID 046d:0991 Logitech, Inc. Quickcam Pro for Notebooks

Works good, offers some high resolution modes, but image sharpness drops to the corners. Never tried it with skype.

That’s different than the one with the dark focus ring. Logitech used
the name “Quickcam Pro” several times for different products, but the one
that’s identified as having the “dark focus ring” won’t work.

The USB ID for the device I’m talking about is 046d:d001, uses the DIVIO
NW801/NW802 chipset. The one you’ve got is a much newer device with a 2
MP sensor, glass lens, autofocus, and built-in mic (which the one I’m
talking about doesn’t have).
