Webcam Install

I am trying to install a Logitech QC Express but nothing works. It shows up in my Hardware Information in list of USB devices. I tried to install v4l (via Yast->Software Management) but “libv4l” is outdated in YAST and v4l2 is installed but doesn’t seem to be helping.

Even if it is “detected”, it doesn’t show up in Kopete, Gyachi or Skype. Also it doesn’t show up in wcqcam. So I think I have not installed properly!! :open_mouth: Please guide me what to try out :’(

For webcam driver installation guidance:
http://en.opensuse.org/HCL/Web_Cameras
Newer webcam drivers (gspcav and uvcvideo) can be found in the openSUSE
buildservice webcam repositories below
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/drivers:/webcam/ .

You may want to check first if your current kernel has a module loaded
for the camera, e.g. by looking at the output of “hwinfo --usb”.

One out of ten logitechs do have issues with linux, but it is a good brand with linux none the less.
Usually most of them are plug and play, witch linux has no issues with most of the time.
To make sure its not your webcam and is a bug with one of the linux apps i suggest to try installing cheese.
Also try popping in the webcam in another USB port, I learned this when my webcam refused to work in the front USB ports of my computer but in the back the webcam works fine and dandy.
A odd issue but easy enough to overcome, that is if you have plenty of USB ports, my girl has 6 of them luckily enough as I abuse the h e double l out of them

here is some info from that command ‘hwinfo --usb’

Vendor: usb 0x046d “Logitech, Inc.”
Device: usb 0x0928 “Quickcam Express”
Driver: “spca561”
Driver Modules: “gspca_spca561”

Driver Info #0:
Driver Status: gspca_spca561 is active
Driver Activation Cmd: “modprobe gspca_spca561”
Config Status: cfg=no, avail=yes, need=no, active=unknown

Its a long list so please let me know what I should look for.
The software “webcam-gspca2” does not install from the first link provided i.e. HCL/Web Cameras - openSUSE

I’m trying the other suggestions. Also I would like to mention that I am working on KDE not GNOME and if I should still go ahead with installing Cheese.

Thanks for your help.

yeh install cheese, see if it works…
Me I never had any luck with it in openSUSE but experiences differ.]
It works in both gnome and KDE, the default DE does not really matter in this case.

okay so cheese doesn’t seem to be recognizing my webcam either!:’(:’(
i guess there is still a driver problem?? did the information from ‘hwinfo --usb’ help?

I think I should also install webcam-gspca2, but i keep getting this error

any ideas on how to bypass it???
