My latest bee in the bonnet is a web based calendar. Do we have anything like that available nm openSUSE. I don’t want to carry a diary with me and then try to synch it to Sunbird on my openSUSE workstation when I get back. So I thought “try XRDP or VNC remote desktop and connect to the office workstation when away from the office”. But these apps have been killed by KDE4 for me. KDE4 serves big bandwidth over remote desktop connections even at the lower resolutions. But worse – it can’t get the screen shape right – the aspect ratio is wonky.
So now I’m thinking that an openSUSE home server with a web-based calendar might be the go. And then I thought “maybe there are other office-like apps that are web based too, that could be used over the net to connect to a home server while on the job away from home”. Running apps on an Apache server would be less bandwidth-heavy than a VPN, don’t you think?
Anyway, the first question is: do we have a web based calendar available on openSUSE, or installable in it from sources?
And the second question is: are there other paperwork-like or office-like apps that can be web-based in Linux?
This has got to be more than wishful thinking.

Unless you are worried about Google accessing your entries, why not use Google calendar? My entries are things like remember to buy batteries, remember to do the laundry and that sort of thing so I don’t give a stuff if Google looks at them.
I use Thunderbird with the Lightning and gcal addons to access my calendar from the office or home. You can restrict access to yourself by allowing access by private URL only (see Google calendar options).
Plenty of calendars but the problem is tasks/to-do’s. Google Cal doesn’t support them yet (though it’s apparently imminent), and Lightning’s task management is hopeless: it can’t even sort them properly. I’ve resorted to using Outlook running in Virtualbox until I find something useable that will sync with my PDA.
As for Web sync, Funambol works quite well. You can also install their server on your own box.
Thanks all for the tips. I don’t quite warm to google calendar yet. I know their product will become very slick as a work management tool in a year or two – google stuff always does become slick. Maybe I’ll re-look at it then.
The rest gives a very long list of possibilities which , like Andy, I’ll slowly wade through.
