Having determined that the driver is not the problem, I bought a well shielded USB extender cable and experimenting with placement my signal has increased to around 50%, which is more that acceptable.

On my Laptop a few cm to the side is having a better Signal.
But fine to hear, that all is working now.

Change the SSID and check the modem’s signal strength. But some modems cause problems. Use the 192.168.1.1 page to access your modem’s settings. You can get a good access from here.
