We need to Fight Back!!

I searched for “openSuSE 11.1 interactive boot” thru Google in Firefox. One of the results returned was:

suse, install in suse linux
suse interactive startup suse and multiseat suse run xscreensaver deamon on startup … suse 11.1 encrypt suse linux 10.1 boot image pata ali suse on suse …

Clicking on this item took me instead to:
http://virusinfocheck. … Personal Antivirus
Which promptly started “checking” out my 'puter stating that I had so many trojans it wasn’t even funny. It drew a page that looks like when you click on the “Computer” icon in Windows. Interesting how it did all this and made claims about my Windows and I was booted up in Linux!!!
Now then, the fight back part. I am hoping that some of you out there have enough knowledge and authority to get this OFF the Net. AFTER scanning my system and telling me about all those trojans it was insisting that I downloaded their software. I was finally able to get out … BUT … I know there are lots of innocent people out there downloading, by force, purchasing, by force any number of these programs. I’ve gotten them in Windows many times and have had one heck of a time getting “OUT” of them. This is the first time I have experienced it in Linux. We need to stop this NOW before it gets out of hand like in Windows.

Shouldn’t this really be in general chit-chat or similar instead of networking?

Hmmmmm… In response… I wasn’t sure where to put this BUT since it was involving the Internet I assumed this would be a good starting point. IF I could get a better result posting this somewhere else, please let me know. I just want to do everything I can to stop these @$%& people.

Moved to chit chat

from where was it moved? (only way i have (via nntp) to read the
original post is to find that now orphaned thread)

if you could, in the future, just click to quote the original and then
write your “moved to” line…

Didn’t understand NNTP too well. Here’s the old one (I think):

http://forums.opensuse.org/network-internet/413842-we-need-fight-back.html

From memory, way back in my days of MS Windows, virus info check sites often resulted in browser (mostly MS IE) hijack, so that every time you ran your browser it would re-start at the offending site. If that happened it was fairly easy to clear because browser settings were changed that could be reset. You are right to be cautious. Beyond that, if you actually clicked on the site it might drop a trojan. Then a Windows sytem would be potentially in big trouble. I have not yet experienced infection by a trojan on linux. I gather it is much, much less likely to successfully unleash its payload.

Malware nowadays is delivered by seriously organized crime, using “bullet-proof” server sites, and mostly through email that delivers a payload to your machine, that generates more infected spam. Apparently, the criminal organization there hasn’t changed over the centuries. There is a chain between the low-life that sends you the infected email, and the person who eventually cashes in on your personal data harvested at different points along the chain. This makes it difficult for even specialized police forces to catch and convict the criminals. The servers operate in global chains on the internet and can relocate very quickly.

Going after sites like that, for us is probaly a fruitless task. Prevention is your main weapon e.g firewalls, spam removers, anti-virus software, etc. Common sense helps a lot. Don’t reply to those emails from sites/people/businesses you don’t really know, and never, NEVER mail or give your passwords to anyone no matter who asks, particularly by email. I expect, you know all about that…

found it in network-internet and quote and answer it here:

as you learned, just close the tab (or Firefox) and THEN, do the
search again and scroll down to the bottom of the google page and
click on “Dissatisfied? Help us improve” and fill in the form that
pops up…that way you provide the needed info directly to the folks
with both the “knowledge and authority” to get if off Google…if you
wish to get your local law enforcement involved (as “wire fraud” is a
crime in most countries) you may do that via email and you will find
that more and more cop and (for example) State’s Attorneys are
cracking down on these kinds of slimy hucksters (these slimy crooks
seem to be somewhere inside China)…

i told Google, and by using ping learned that
http://virusinfocheck.com resolves to 38.99.170.209 which is owned by
Cogent Communications, Inc., and i sent them an email…THEY have the
authority to enforce their Terms of Service (and pull the plug on the
scum)…

ok?

They do however fool about 50% of the computer users out there.
