Was impatient for 12.1, so 12.1 RC to be

Yesterday my patient for waiting 12.1 ended and decide to download the RC. To start with critics - there’s no progress-bar/animation on boot time :frowning: However, the look of the live CD desktop absolutely compensate for that. I decide that it won’t hurt to install on actual hard drive. After nice install and autoconfig, there’s come the KDM log-in screen…Oh, Lord! Was I totally blown away? Oh, yes! The log-in, and the transition to the desktop is the most slick experience of that kind that any OS has today(on top of my head the most polish and beautiful of all time).
With a bit of a trouble with my wireless(detected on second log-in) 12.1 seems like very well put together release, which one could put on a hard disk and simply enjoy his/her computing needs. Surprisingly GTK applications have shadows, zypper seems faster then ever, KDE 4.7 is looking like one could use all of it(activities, akonadi, nepomuk, are things that normally I didn’t use, but now seems ok), thanx to systemd boot time seems to be improved.

Big thanx to all involved in putting 12.1 together, so my laptop can rocking it now(will try to wait 17 days for 12.1 on my desktop, in doubt I’ll be as patient).

I can absolutely understand your impatience. Its the same to me. But i
will wait until its out.
To be quite honest, i installed just recently Windows 7 and if i
compare it to my Linux, Linux wins.
openSUSE 11.4 seems to be faster then Windows and to me more
importantly, Twonkymedia runs right away without a user logging in.
That is unlike Windows were a user needs to be logged in.

I am very excited as well for KDE 4.7, i think i have 4.6. Over time i
found KDE to be very good as a desktop.
This next version will be for me a test to use BTRFS for the first
time. I just have to try it this time.

We should make a subject about our experiences once 12.1 is out.

I’m in the research stage of whether to replace the desktop (Ubuntu 10.04 LTS) with openSUSE when April comes around (or when my wife gets her Windows laptop).

Personally, I haven’t used OpenSUSE in a while, although I am looking for a change. I’ve been primarily using ubuntu and its family since 2004, but in 15 days I’m going to be switching over to the lizard with an open mind. I’m pretty anxious to be honest. Since I have been using kubuntu and have long since remembered how polished OpenSUSE has always seemed with regard to KDE, the anticipation is growing day by day. I’ve really been getting my feet wet with KDE and I can’t help but say that I really am enjoying it. I know that I’ve just scratched the surface of KDE 4.7 and can’t wait to learn more and do more in 15 days!

I’m sure OpenSUSE won’t disappoint!

Didn’t you run openSUSE? Ah, a traitor.

Well, i had Ubuntu and its great. I just find openSUSE more appealing
in many respects.
But one should always use what serves the purpose best.

And i haven’t tried Ubuntu for a while so not sure how it improved
since 9.04 (my last version).

I have installed the Beta of 12.1 on an old computer and I am also excited and curious on how the 12.1 final will be. Installing the Beta (and one unfinished trial of installing the RC) was a bit of a hassle, as the installation stopped in the middle and did not go on. This is why I don´t have the RC installed. But I am sure, this will be sorted out when it is final.

@rubyplusplus: I also was a long term Ubuntu and Kubuntu user and I made the switch last year with openSUSE 11.3. I am sure, you won´t be disappointed.
The package system was a bit “strange” for me and it is just a matter of learning, but openSUSE scores when it comes to stability (for me Kubuntu always was on the shaky side of life - don´t know why) and “Susy” comes with a lot of cool features and tools which do the editing of config files for you.

my last version was 10.04 and I saw a decline in quality since 9.04. Until 9.04 it was all more or less on the same quality level, but after that, it went downhill, in my opinion. Especially in Kubuntu… Kubuntu 9.04 was the best Kubuntu version I had and Kubuntu 10.04 drove me over to openSUSE. I tried Kubuntu 11.04 some weeks ago and it was even more horrible than 10.04. Crashes all over the place… Suse on the same machine runs rocksolid.

I keep trying to run openSUSE, and actually had it for a while a few years ago. Part of it is making up my mind as to what I am trying to do and being able to restrain myself from impulsive installations  Having a hard drive for my laptop dedicated to my impulsive testing has helped a lot!

I am looking at openSUSE for the desktop, over Fedora, because of its longer support live (18 months) and nicer proprietary/codec handling. Ubuntu LTS life (3 or soon 5 years for the desktop) is hard to counter, but Ubuntu’s Unity is something I don’t know if I want to go down that road. Plus if I get comfortable with openSUSE on the desktop then I can start looking at it on my server.

It also doesn’t hurt that a number of people I meet who are sys admins, if they use Linux they use openSUSE. Don’t ask me why, but that’s what I’ve noticed trend-wise. People just looking to use Linux as a desktop seem to focus on Ubuntu and younger or more “free” (time-wise; no kids/wife/etc.) kids I find using Fedora.

Actually it will become a lot easier once my wife moves to primarily using a new computer. The kids are much more flexible and open minded about working Linux. My wife is “tolerant” at this point though I now have to find Windows equivalent of Linux software (ain’t that usually reversed?)!

If there would be YaST control for btrfs that would be amazing, but for now I’m going with ext4.

Btw, yesterday installed same CD and on my desktop(patience seems to not be in my virtues  ). For the first time the nouveau driver is usable on my machine:)

I think you should use what works best right now. To me openSUSe works
just fine and i know how to get things running i need to have running.
Every Linux is a little different and it would take me time to relearn
some of stuff and how to install etc…
So i stay with what i have. Ubuntu’s Unity is something new and from
what i read, its not bad really. It seem we will see in the future
cellphones and tablets running Ubuntu and therefore the UI from the
desktop makes sense for Ubuntu.

I never had Fedora running but it makes me sometimes curious. But on
second thought, i think i just stay.
Another concern is usually stability. So far, i never had any issues
with openSUSe.

But i understand the hardship if the rest wants to use, lets say,
Windows. You are just out of luck.

Well, Btrfs will be comming as a standard at one point. So far it is
still unstable but useable according to 'ct the magazine.
There will be also soon a btrfs tool released which can fix the
harddrive. As far as i know that is not working automatically right now.
I will still install it.

Right now i don’t need 3D so i have these nouveau drivers running.
Works fine for me.

Actually the file system itself is considered stable AFAIK. The problem is there is no working fsck for it

BrainShare 2011 Friday Keynote - SUSE Part 2 - YouTube
Btrfs + YaST start to look really great. Hmm, I may reinstall with btrfs at some point.

I have high hopes for this file system although I think I won’t be using it in the near future. He’s a nice article about it and some information on the status of fsck.

Whither btrfsck? [LWN.net]

Best regards,
Greg

It makes me uneasy to actually install it then. It looks like it will
be not ready in the near future. Perhaps with the next Suse release
then.

Maybe Fedora or Arch guys will jump at it sooner and will test it for us

After reading the link that got posted, i have the feeling that it is
not a good idea to use it at the moment.
This is actually sad, because i was looking forward for this. But i
feel that i am safer with the current setup that i have at the moment.
Still, i am convinced that it will be the future but we just don’t know
when that will happen.
