This was in the opensuse-kde Mailing List yesterday:
With openSUSE 11.3 less than a week away, soon it’ll be time to think about
11.3+1 which will be released in March 2011 with KDE SC 4.6.
This should interest people using the KDE Factory repository a great deal,
because it means that Factory should move to KDE SC 4.5 RC very shortly, and
in November it will move to KDE SC 4.6 Beta. Leaving users with no choice
other than using 4.6 Beta or downgrading to 4.4.4 which will be the version
officially supported in 11.3 and available in the KDE Stable repository.
In other words, if you don’t wish to use KDE SC 4.6 Beta in November, don’t
use the KDE Factory repository! Switch to the KDE Stable repository, which
already has 4.4.4. Consider yourself warned.
A discussion is taking place there about if a kde45 repo could be setup to bridge the transition.
But I thought it worth bringing to your attention and assume that if you are using Factory, you also have sufficient knowledge of what to do or how to manage the situation.
Interesting … my thinking a bit out of the box ? … … this has me thinking that I ‘might’ update the KDE in my wife’s Fujitsu-Siemens laptop openSUSE-11.1 from KDE-4.3.5 to KDE-4.4.4 (which will be the version officially supported in 11.3).
Neither openSUSE-11.2 nor 11.3 run on this laptop (due it its i855GM Intel graphics incompatibility with kernels after the 2.6.27 kernel). In fact, I now call this laptop “the Linux killer” as no recent distribution runs on it with the Intel driver (the FBDEV driver works, but who wants to use that driver ? ). openSUSE-11.1 with the 2.6.27 kernel runs well on this laptop’s i855GM (with special desktop effects running smoothly).
and then updating to KDE-4.4.4. Presumeably the openSUSE-11.3 testing should mean this KDE4 version is relatively stable (while noting that 4.4.4 is NOT an official 11.1 KDE4 version, there is always a risk, but I’m thinking 4.4.4 should be more stable than 4.1.3 and also more stable than KDE-4.3.5 (where I currently have 4.3.5 on this laptop with openSUSE-11.1).
For those who do try and roll back, you’ll have fun with a bunch of kde branding dependencies. Even when you try and use the switcher like this: ImageBam - Fast, Free Image Hosting and Photo Sharing
You will need to manually use the radio button method: ImageBam - Fast, Free Image Hosting and Photo Sharing
To switch some packages it complains about from 11.3 branding to 11.2 branding (they will come from the 11.2 update repo)
WHATEVER…
The announcement was generalization to alert any users of the changes in ‘Factory’ ‘Whatever repo’…
Most forum users do not sub the ML and probably use version specific factory (Eg: Index of /repositories/KDE:/Distro:/Factory/openSUSE_11.2 )
To be sure we are Talking factory only.
Not the repos listed as ** “Updated applications only”** on this page: KDE/Repositories - openSUSE
Could we in time call them the future KDE45’s ?
My main desktop is at 11.2 with 2 repos that have “Factory” in their title: KDE and KDE community.
I have a test pc with 11.3 RC2 and IIRC, just the 4 basic repos.
Finally, I have a laptop with 11.2 and I’m unsure of the repos right now.
I don’t care about the test pc. It can go to KDE 6.6.6 for all I care. However, I don’t want to be too bleeding edge on the main desktop. I want it to run everyday. When suse was around 8.0, I would swear at KDE a lot. I don’t want to swear anymore. I’m a little more tolerant of problems on the laptop, but I don’t want to have to do a re-install on a regular basis just to get a working DE.
I will probably upgrade the desktop and laptop to 11.3 in a few days. Where do I want to be with the KDE repos? I suspect there are a lot of people who did not read this thread and will soon wish they had.
But too me - although the apps are more up to date, I can’t see the value for me. But the package list may be more interesting to others…
Take note, if you using 11.2 and are rolling back from a ‘Factory’ 4.4.5 to the above 4.4.4 - Watch out - ! (And using the 'system switcher in Yast)
Some (about 4 or 5) openSUSE-branding packages are for 11.3 and you need to manually use the radio button switching to get those from 11.2 Updates
(At least, this was the case at time of writing)
Thanks caf4926 to make clearer the list of repos we have in opensuse. I was totally lost in my repos configuration. And there goes my question: Can you explain which is the map of the repositories of KDE? Is there Stable, Factory and unstable (as in Debian)?
11.3 goes with KDE 4.4.4, if I have 11.3+KDE4.5rc (coming from RC2) and no specific KDE repository I will have forever 4.5rc, isn’t it? Is there a KDE4.5 repo that doesn’t upgrade in the future to 4.6? will it have security updates?
Factory = (Not easy this one) But think of a factory as a place where things are made/developed… In openSUSE terms this focus is the next release.
Unstable = (What it tells you really)
Generally I would advise sticking with stable, unless you are wanting to test software in development and deal with the consequences. Even using stable, you can get some of the latest apps in KDE by adding ‘Backports’.
In the early days of KDE4 there really was a need to get the latest and greatest. Now, I don’t think so.
11.3 is released with KDE4.4.4
If you currently have Factory and 4.5 RC2, then NO, you’ll not stay with that, because as the point of this thread brings to folks attention, Factory will keep shifting in development for the next SUSE release which will have KDE4.6.
Hello,
iam running o.S. 11.1. on my Siemens_Fujitsy laptop EM V5535. Is that the same type as Your wife’s laptop the driver of which is said to be unable to run with kernels
later than 2.6.27 ? Should i stop my intention to install o.S.11.2 or 11.3 ?
Thank E.K.
My apologies, but you have SERIOUSLY over estimated my knowledge. I have absolutely NO IDEA as to what graphics an Siemens_Fujitsy laptop EM V5535 has. I have never heard of it.
My wife’s laptop is an Amilo 7400M with the i855GM graphics. It is the i855GM graphics that causes the problem.
Also, I think you really should ask this question on a separate thread.
Last night I updated my wife’s Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo 7400M laptop (with the i855GM graphics) running openSUSE-11.1 to KDE-4.4.4 (using the KDE4 ‘stable’ repos). This KDE-4.4.4 is much more stable and functional than the KDE-4.1.3 that came with openSUSE-11.1 and indeed superior IMHO to the KDE-4.3.1 that came with openSUSE-11.2. It works well, and it gives openSUSE-11.1 some more ‘added’ life.
