Warning - Lastest Kernal does not support NVIDIA MCP55

I allowed the update manager to update my system and it would not longer boot. The boot log would fail every time in tried to access the MCP55. It would try to load the KDE desktop and complain that it could not load kdmanager. I was forced to reinstall 12.1 from my DVD, which does not support the latest nvidia graphics cards like SUSE 11.x did. No more auto updates for me thank you. I hope 12.2 is tested more then 12.1 before release.

How was the NVIDIA driver installed? If there is kernel update and the driver is installed by hand then you need to manually reinstall the driver.

Kernel 3.3 has a problem with Nvidia. We discovered that for Tumbleweed. Here’s the reference: Temporary sticky: Nvidia driver & kernel 3.3

Probably you need to run these commands as root, one at a time in sequence:

  • cd /usr/src/linux
  • make cloneconfig
  • make prepare
  • cd /lib/modules/uname -r/source/arch/x86/include/
  • cp -v generated/asm/unistd*.h ./asm/
