Depending on the LiveCD you’re using, you might try plugging in a blank
USB flash drive - ISTR that the 11.3 LiveCDs will detect that and use it
to store persistent settings.
But if your flash drive is big enough and your system will boot from it,
you might consider looking at building a system booting from the flash
drive, as the USB interface will generally be faster than the CD/DVD
drive in the system.
