want to install 11.0 and keep 10.3

hi all
could anyone put me on the right path? using opensuse 10.3 upgraded from 10.1 in doing so /data1 was created on the / directory. The /data(/dev/sdb6)(reiserfs) is the mount point for 10.1 which is not mounted at boot , was thinking of removing 10.1 and installing opensuse 11.0 on it or would it be better to go for a complete new install of 11.0 If i just remove /data1, could I then install 11.0 as I would like to keep 10.3 for while

Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/sdb7 20G 8.9G 9.9G 48% /
udev 1007M 108K 1007M 1% /dev
/dev/sdb8 55G 40G 13G 76% /home
/dev/sda2 146G 100G 47G 69% /windows/C
/dev/sdb1 51G 37G 15G 72% /windows/D
/dev/sdb6 21G 5.0G 16G 25% /data1

You should be able to use sdb6 as the / of a 11.0 install and mount the same /home. You just have to tell the installer this is what you want. And you should use the GRUB of 11.0, and add 10.3 as another OS, because the ext3 went to 256 byte inodes and I don’t know if the 10.3 GRUB is recent enough to handle this.

One thing to watch out for is that KDE4 might change the config files in your home directory making it difficult to go back to KDE3 on 10.3. So you might want to pick KDE3 in 11.0.

when I posted I then realized 11.0 could not be mounted on /data1 as I would have too mount / on 10.3 to get at it silly me at least I know it can be done. The problem is I have only 20 gig on sdb6 but your idea of making /home on /dev/sdb8 for both 10.3 and 11.0 is worth a try if I mess up I can always go for a full install of 11.0 I will gather as much info on it first will need a weekend for to install
Thanks for all the help

hi
Hope this explains my intension’s a bit better

I am hoping to use /home directory for both opensuse 10.3 and 11.0 so any time there is an upgrade i can install the new one in place of the older version (in this case installing 11.00 and getting rid of 10.1 and keeping 10.3 ) I dont know much about partitioning this is the first
time trying to get it right ,the other installs were just press a button and hope for the best.
Below is what the 11.0 installer wants to set up for me

Format partition /dev/sdb6 (20GB) with ext3
use /dev/sdb5 as swap
set mount point of /dev/sdb8 to /home
set mount point of /dev/sda1 to /windows/C
set mount point of /dev/sda2 to /windows/D
set mount point of /dev/sdb1 to /windows/E

and this is the set up i have at the moment

Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/sdb7 20G 8.9G 9.9G 48% /
udev 1007M 108K 1007M 1% /dev
/dev/sdb8 55G 41G 12G 78% /home
/dev/sda2 146G 101G 46G 69% /windows/C
/dev/sdb1 51G 4.1G 47G 9% /windows/D
/dev/sdb6 21G 5.0G 16G 25% /data1

does this look ok i cant see /dev/sdb7 which is my / directory for 10.3 would it still be in grub so i could still set it up from there .If i edit the fstab on 11.0 to mount on sdb8 i should have the same /home on both is that the case. Also i have a /windows/E ? havent a clue what this is .
would be delighted with any with any help( I backed up all the files on /windows/D(/dev/sdb1)so it is empty but it shows 4.1 gig is this because it is NTFS if so if i formated /windows/D for ext3 would this be gone
thanks again for the help

Looks ok to me. You will be able to add the other OSes (Windows, 10.3) to the bootloader config later in the install.
