Installed 11.4 as plain old desktop and now I can’t see my other boxen by smb: unless I turn off the firewall. It seems that I should have installed as a ‘server’. Can I get a networkable machine by some means other than re-installation and that is stable?
To use Samba with openSUSE you need to open three functions in the Firewall. Start with:
YaST / Security and Users / Firewall / Allowed Services (on Left) / External Zone / Service To Allow
Add the following Three Services:
Netbios Server
Samba Client
Samba Server
Press Next and then Finish
In addition, we have reported issues with apparmor, which may keep Samba nmb from running, when it is required. Do this only if smb is still not working for you. To turn off Apparmor, do the following:
YaST / System / System Service (Runlevel) / Expert Mode
Select aaeventd, then the Set/Reset Button on Bottom right and Disable The Service.
Next Select the Start/Stop/Refresh button on the bottom left and select Stop Now.
Do the Same again for:
Select boot.apparmor, then the Set/Reset Button on Bottom right and Disable The Service.
Next Select the Start/Stop/Refresh button on the bottom left and select Stop Now.
Press the OK button on the bottom right to complete your selections.
Perform these steps as required and let us know if you still are having any smb issues.
Thank You,
In my case it was necessary to disable Apparmor to get Samba working
Thanks again for your help, James**, but I’ve decided that, on the basis of ‘Life’s too short for Linux (dabbling)’, I’m moving on to a distro that is set up to spot WiFi driver needs from the start. I think it is a very polished distro but some work needs to be done under the polish still. As an old Novell admin, I’m saddened, but there you are.
**and to Viviano, below, too.

Its not sad pofadda. openSUSE 11.4 has on purpose chose to use the bleeding edge software that has been released. In time, often just a few weeks, such issues will be resolved. I am using Samba right now on my home network and it is working just fine. But indeed, there were issues at first, as it always seems to be when a new release comes. The fact that there are other distributions to select from shows the variety in Linux, though long ago I decided to stick with the very first one, SuSE 10.0, that I was able to get work on my old Dell laptop so long ago. As a Novell admin, there is always SuSE Linux Enterprise Desktop or Server, but those much more stable release are not free. Or, you could drop back one to openSUSE 11.3. I for one have figured out how to replace most components that have an issue and really, if stability was all I was looking for I would not be trying every new release that comes out. Its the challenge and the hope that I can help someone else in need with openSUSE. Good luck in what ever Distro you decide to use.
Thank You,
