want HUGE console font. and other console resolution issues.

I actually have two problems regarding console font size.

For assorted reasons I sometimes want to temporarily set the font to something huge with setfont on the fly IE. from within a console vim session on my laptop

:!setfont suse12x22.psfu.gz

Seems to be the best option. But I’d like to go even larger.
And there don’t seem to be many large font choices… Is there a package for that?

But of far greater importance to me is:

I’ve also just added OpenSuSE 12.2 to my desktop pc which has built in Nvidia graphics and a sony flat screen monitor on which, regardless of what font I use. The console text only uses a little over a quarter of the actual screen area. That is line wrap occurs approximately 60 percent of the way to the physical right hand side. And the text starts scrolling off the top of the screen with approximately the bottom 40% of the screen still blank.

Any suggestions?

Before diving into the font size matter, do you have the NVIDIA drivers installed?

To do so:
Yast - Software - Repositories - Add - Reposities maintained by the community - NVIDIA. OK. OK. When asked to trust a key, trust it.
Yast - Software - Softwaremanagement. The driver packages should be selected for auto-install.

After that, reinvestigate the font sizes in your console / terminal window, try the setfont command and get back here with results.

Did you try if this only happens in VT1? Try other terminals: 2,3…
(VT1 has the framebuffer background)

It was & its description listed GeForce 6xxx which fits with the GeForce 6150 LE
listed on the front of my old hp pavilion desktop…

Just to be clear, I was talking about a console {IE: tty1} NOT a terminal
window. I had no such problems inside a “Konsole” or other terminal window.

The “in use” console text area didn’t change… My camera wouldn’t change it’s
flash mode for some unknown reason, but you can just make out the whole
console screen in this image

This was after installing the nvidia driver and then doing an

setfont suse12x22.psfu.gz

I note that inside X the screen area and fonts are {and were} just fine.

At least they were with icewm which I used until I installed e17 from the new
“Factory” repo. And then E17 looked as good as I’ve ever seen the default theme
look. Though I note that E17’s display settings module offered me 5 screen
resolutions: {both before AND after installing Nvidia driver…}

1280x1024
1280x960
1024x768
800x600
640x480

To make application menus easy on my eyes I usually configure for 1024x768
which had worked properly for a couple of boots before you told me where to
find the nvidia drivers. Once I installed the Nvidia driver however the
screen starts with the {taskbar like} “shelf” that sits on the bottom edge of
the screen out of sight, below the physical bottom of the screen. When I opened
the settings control panel to tweak it, I had to drag it up about two inches
or so before it’s window was completely visible.

This appeared to clear up when I briefly set the resolution to 1280x1024, and
then set it again to my preferred 1024x768.

However, I note that each time I boot up with the 1024x768 resolution, I need
to reset the resolution setting again so that the screen is properly sized…

I did not have to do that before installing the nvidia driver???

Yup… I tried at least 4 of the available 6 tty. About the only time I start
with tty1 is when I boot directly to runlevel 3… I haven’t gone there yet
with the new installation on my desktop. So the first tty used would most likely
have been reached via <ctrl>+<alt>+<F2>… But since I recall having 2 initial
user AND 2 root logins at the same time, at least 3 of them had to match
tty[2-6] and ALL of them had the problem. {sigh}

To get a larger console font, you can install the Terminus font package.
Then setfont ter-132n will get you a 32-pixel font. I don’t know an
easy way to get a larger one.

Actually the Terminus font package would do wonders for that part of my request… I vaguely remember having installed such a thing, once upon a time, to some other distro. And as a matter of fact I thought I searched for it already with zypper. But I must have misspelled it cause when I pasted your spelling of the name in,

And that will solve my laptop issue… Thanks!

My desktop PC’s problem is another matter however. I’d think it was simply a resolution setting issue, except that anytime I ever forced a lower screen resolution, the reduced text area expanded to fill the screen with larger characters. Still I will experiment with vga=xxx and video=XXXXxYYYY-bps@Hz kernel args anyway…
Though I’m not really certain how to determine the correct bps value… ???

And I’m still wondering why it is that ever since installing the nvidia driver, If I have E17 initialize with my preferred X resolution of 1024x768, I have to toggle it’s setting through another resolution setting before the entire logical screen fits inside the physical screen area… THAT problem I didn’t have untill I installed the nvidia driver…
