wallpapers

this is waaaay off topic and has nothing to do with openSuSE , but as a fan of open source especially Linux, I have released a few wallpapers over at kde-look.org, I thought i’d share, give a tiny bit back to the folks who sweat and toil over the open source apps they kindly give away…they kind of run the gamut of tastes, hope you guys like some of 'em. If you’re a member of open desktop network, don’t foget to rate:shame:lol!

So I did download all of seven of them and I liked the one called Florage the best and the Classic picture second. The moons were also nice as the moon was very high resolution, but the over all picture was kind of dark, which is normal for night of course. The picture strawberry_red is the most likely to get put on my desktop however, because the picture is nice, but it is light (mostly white), with blank places for desktop icons, if you are so inclined. I am not that much into sorceress pictures however, unless they are wearing a lot less than you show. lol!

So, how did you create these pictures? What kind of effort is required and how did you come by the subject matter? And thanks for sharing them with us, I am a very big desktop background image sort of guy as I keep lots of them and change them often. I don’t create them however as I leave that up to people with more talent at this than I, such as yourself.

Thank You,

nice!! thanks!!

Those are primarily image manipulation projects, I am working on a 3d model right now which I hope to offer at kde-look in the coming weeks…

The the awesome thing about opensource is that if you are interested in opening doors to new worlds whether it be as a career choice or as a hobby, no one says “YOU CAN’T”, there is no one asking you to pay a couple grand for suites or 3d apps, no one saying you have to buy an OS, no one saying you have to have your OS tied to your hardware (apple is evil), no one is saying you have to have a bachelor’s degree, wear thick rimmed glasses and listen to coldplay to be d**n good at what you do, it simply says: “Go For It!!”

a long time ago when MS dropped support for 98 I was in need of a new OS, I was extremely limited on funds and even more limited on tech knowledge. My kit was quite old and I had read that Linux breaths new life into old systems.

My background has always been in fine arts and once I had installed SuSE 10.1, I joined the old forum started by vir@s in order to get a winmodem to work (Hey Gonzo, Oldcpu, DeltaFlyer) , which it did eventually, this began the journey into whole new worlds and concepts which I had never thought of before, primarily due to the fact that proprietary software is darn good at keeping people with limited incomes in the dark (opens source is the key to educating the masses).

I became interested in digital media, laid down my brushes and began understanding concepts freely available through the open source community.

one thing led to another, I picked up everything from image manipulation to css to building my own kits and server side scripting languages such as PHP (though I have to admit I am far too left brain for php and javascript).

as you know the repos provide incredible apps which provide stunning alternatives to the usual adobe and autodesk monopolies, if you want to be blown away by just really how many alternatives there are check out the Open Source As Alternative website

you want to do some high-end 3d work use Blender (and I don’t care what some might say, it can render some serious images it has been used in hollywood productions)
you need something like Poser? well there is make human!

you want to make a movie but have no funds for Avid, try Cinelerra! (Oldcpu remember that one?)

Even the usual cubicle Mac jockey training websites such as Lynda.com are offering tutorials on blender (though investing in the books helps a lot support blender)

sites such as devianart are showing incredible works by people who use the GIMP as their primary image manipulator. There are also resources like brushes for gimp there as well.

if you want to learn, simply do a search for the program you want to learn, (install from the repos only), seek out tutorials and play…open source opens many, many doors and concepts to those who have had their avenues of freedom limited by proprietary programs and OSs.

p.s. to jdmcdaniel13, I was just up in Austin not long ago had some grub in Sandra Bullock’s place and took my son to see the capitol around the corner fun town, love the hill country, I actually live abroad though.

KeyserSuSE, I enjoyed your very enthusiastic story. Stick with what you are doing as it seems to be working well for you. It is interesting you mention SuSE Linux 10.1, as this was the first version I really started using. I liked it so much, I even purchased a boxed set. It still sits in my bookcase of honor, though very dated today.

Your story about Sandra Bullock’s place was very interesting as I have yet to be invited there.lol! Needless to say, anytime she is here, the local news try to make a story about it. The closes I have been to any stars here was working out at the Film Stages near the old Mueller airport. I do HVAC control systems and did the A/C controls in two of the large film stages here (ran by the Austin Film Society), included one with a very large green screen. But, no calls from any agents so far. lol!

Thank You,

Oops, I meant to say Bess Bistro down there on sixth…

the box set, oh yes I also invested in the SLED version…I have to say the experience was awesome, old hardware pumping out nice kde graphics and even ran compiz…vista would have melted the thing down lol!

sounds like you’ve done work where troublemaker shoots. I am pretty stoked you enjoyed the work thanks a lot.

I like #6. Reminds me of “Here’s looking at you, kid”.
