waiting impatiently for USB5

hi wolfi,
you can guess 3 times what happens by plugging usb3 storage devices (2.5" originally enclosed by seagate and also normal sticks) in a usb3 port and by different laptops
I have plenty of space for installing other distros, are you interested on comparing? What would you install after ubuntu ?
An other project would be organize a bombing raid on nec coorporation…

Hi Capodastro. You have posted in a help forum. I’ll move it to General Chit-Chat.

Moved from Laptop forum.

Well, that would depend on which Desktop Environment you use f.e.
In KDE I would suppose the device notifier pops up with the drive’s partitions (if it has valid filesystems on it).

But I guess you want to point out that it doesn’t work with some laptops or something like that?

Well, I don’t use USB3 myself. I don’t even have a system with USB3 ports.

Not really.
I never would install anything else than openSUSE!

Works the same as USB2 in KDE4 (notification, mounting, etc.), except muuuuuch* faster…

Very nice

*like ~5x faster writing to an external drive

On real hard disks. On flash media I would expect the same write speed.

I dont even use USB3 but my system has it. Using ESATA for my backups to external disk. ~20-70Gbit/s over network with minimal impact to the local machine used as host

Maybe I have something to learn:.

Hmm SIS. 200-700Mbit/s it should have been. I stand corrected.

Mea Culpa.

If you mean a pendrive, I haven’t tested an USB3 one yet, so I wouldn’t know. This 5x faster transfer was with an 500GB 3.1/2" HD in an external enclosure (Samsung), probably a 5400 RPM model.

My guess is “no difference”. Write speed on an USB-2 pendrive is way
slower than what the USB-2 allows.

That’s what I thought.
