w32codec-all and libdvdcss

right, having a couple of multimedia issues here. firstly, just installed suse 11.1 over 11.0, and installed w32codec-all but kaffeine still won’t play .avi, .mpg or .wmv for some reason…on 11.1 that’s all i did i think. this is not TOO much of an issue as mplayer plays it, but i prefer layout of kaffeine. where am i going wrong?

also…i can’t play dvds, not with kaffeine, vlc, or mplayer. i have libdvdread installed, but i searched in repo (i have packman in there) and libdvdcss was not to be found. what need to be doing here? i need to play them, and also have k9copy be able to read them!

thanks so much guys for taking the time to read, and more so if you can reply!!

libdvdcss is in the VLC repo

note that its recommended that you only install the libdvdcss package then disable the vlc repo as it sometimes conflicts with packman

doss

nice one. will try that later when i can

dossjh’s advice is spot on

right, i installed the kde-codecs and kaffeine now plays .mpg .avi and .wmv files. however, i have installed libdvdcss and still it won’t play dvds. not kaffeine, nor vlc.

how come? :\

edit: i have libdvdcss installed, not libdvdcss2, i can’t find this for suse 11.1. what’s going on? please help

after running vlc through a konsole and trying to open up the dvd this is what i got:

libdvdnav: Using dvdnav version 4.1.3
libdvdnav: vm: failed to open/read the DVD
[00000432] dvdread demux error: DVDRead cannot open source: /dev/sr0
[00000435] main access error: no access module matched “dvd”
[00000431] main input error: open of `dvd:///dev/sr0’ failed: could not create access: no access module matched “dvd”

hope this means something to some of you clever guys.

cheers.

do this…

su -
update
#let that finish#
locate libdvd

and let me know what that says…i read someone earlier having an issue with this not being install in 11.1

doss

will it work if you lanch vlc from the console as root?

doss

edit:

can you access the dvds at all? for example if you mount the dvd can you view its contents (with ls for example)

Hi,

vlc can’t be run as root… i can see the data on the dvds once i mount them (which has to be done manually too), but i can’t open the .vob files.

this is really odd…you have any more ideas mate? :expressionless:

cheers

Hi.

Make sure you’ve properly installed xinelib and Kaffeine from Packman.

I also had this exact same issue - I neglected to change my priorities after installing 11.1, and I got a KDE3 backports release of Kaffeine. After (re)installing the Packman port, Kaffeine started working properly.

Check these:
Multi-media and Restricted Format Installation Guide - openSUSE Forums

Check your multimedia problem in ten steps - openSUSE Forums

this is really strange, i have those packages installed…but still can’t play dvds (or read), k9copy can’t read them either.

help!!

cheers.

i tried installing this again (just to make sure)

Restricted Formats/11.1 - openSUSE-Community

but i keep getting the error:

'an error has occurred while initialising the software repository. details:

try again?

huh!? it worked before i swear!

tried that, still no such luck :frowning:

any more ideas?

In yast security and users, add your users to the disk group.

Reboot

wahey! the reboot did the trick!!!

thank you sooooooo much to every one who helped on this topic!

maybe this ‘adding user to the disk group’ should be added to the multimedia guide?

thanks anyway!!!

i THINK this problem is unique to kde 4.x on 11.1 and thats why its not in the guide yet

doss

It shouldn’t require a reboot. You should just need to logout and login.
