vsftpd would not authenticate

I installed 12.3 as a basic server with no GUI then installed vsftpd when I try to start it through yast runlevel I get the message that it cannot start due to a missing service (network-remotefs) but when I start it through the ftp applet it starts(the same with pure-ftpd but it will not start either way). so I return to vsfptd and configure it to allow only authenticated users as I use it to upload files to apache and start it through the applet. but the problem is it won’t allow me to log in with my user account although I added it to the root group and the ftp group. the srver is running although runlevel reports that it is not enabled because I get a log in message from it. I used to have the same config in previous releases and it worked with no problems at all. do you have any solution for this.
