Volume control resets alsa-speaker settings to max

Hello,

I have bugging problem. 12-11-2009 I installed openSUSE 11.2 with no problems. I have had a couple of issues since then though. One of them is about volume settings.

I have 5.1-speaker set, confed succesfully with alsa. alsamixer -c 0 -command shows volume of all the speakers I want to set up. My problem is, when I have alsamixer open and change main volume from gnome-panel (it’s called pavucontrol for me, pulseaudio?) it “resets” all speakers to max (100%). Only master volume changes like planned.

For example, if I have front speakers set to 50%, center to 75%, surround to 100%, subwoofer to 40%, when changing volume from gnome’s panel it only changes master volume, and puts every other speaker to max. How to prevent this? Do you have any clue? I had not any problems with this in openSUSE 11.1. Something radical has changed? I’d appreciate for helping me.

I have another unsolved problems:
Alt+F2 not working with Emerald decorator](http://forums.opensuse.org/applications/393839-alt-f2-not-working-emerald-decorator.html)
Screens go black after 10 minutes or so in openSUSE 11.2

Yours,

Rolle

I also have a lot of these:

pulseaudio[4156]: module-alsa-sink.c: Error opening PCM device front:0: Device or resource is busy

and these:

peikko ntfs-3g[3770]: Inode is corrupt (3708): Input/output error

I use songbird 1.4, and all my tracks are on external hard drive. Before updating to 11.2, the songs played smooth without any pulseaudio messages in system log, AND without any delay. Now it takes about 1-3 seconds to start/change a song track.

Any thoughts?

Also, when I disable compiz, and enable it again, changing volume from volume control of suse has no effect any longer… and I don’t know how to get it back. pavucontrol has no info. Nothing changes in alsamixer when changing volume in gnome-panel’s volumecontrol.

Any help?
:frowning:

Ok I removed pulseaudio completely, and resetted Gnome hotkeys. Lower volume for amixer set Master,0 1- and more volume for amixer set Master,0 1+. Only downside is that there is no graphical interface. But whatever, it works.

I’m verry sorry to see that I needed to find a compromise for myself because didn’t get any help here.

Thanks anyway.

rollex2, I am glad to read you found some sort of solution. Thank you for sharing.

I’ve been watching this thread, but I have nothing to add as I did not have any suggestions.

Frankly, this is not a subject than many would know ANYTHING about, as most of us never encounter this. I’ve never encountered this in 11 years of using Linux full time at home, with many Linux installs on multiple PCs.

Me too, never before. It seems that all the problems started after updating to 11.2 (VNC connection screen does not update (vino) - openSUSE Forums). I’m managing well with this, but I have to make compromises very often and it frustrates me. It would be nice to have on-screen-volumeindicator, or gnome-panel-volume-applet but no can do.
