Hi. The question is… is it possible to somehow use VLC’s software volume control instead of the global system one? Cause every time i adjust it in VLC it affects the system volume and there’s no option to use the software control in VLC’s settings. Any ideas?

i can’t duplicate that symptom on my system…that is, i can play a
movie clip with VLC and move its volume as i wish and the system volume
(as seen in KMix) never moves, not even a little bit…
maybe you need to tell us more…like, to begin with:
-what operating system and version
-what desktop environment and version
-what version of VLC, and where you got it from and how you installed it
-have you made any adjustments to the system sound components (do you
know if you are using pulse, or ???)
-if ever this VLC’s volume could be modulated without impacting the system

Perhaps flat volume problem in pulse? Open the file /etc/pulse/daemon.conf and change the line:
; flat-volumes = yes
to
flat-volumes = no
Make sure to remove the ; as well as shown. Then reboot and see if it helps.
Thanks for your feedback people.
Ok, first off…
- OpenSUSE 11.4
- Gnome 2.32
- VLC 2.04 (but occurs in any version, that matters not), upgraded from official VLC/opensuse repository using 1-click.
- I didn’t adjust the audio system, and yes, PulseAudio is aboard by default.
- And no, VLC has ALWAYS acted like this, unlike other media players such as Audacious or SMPlayer that have an option to use their own software volume control to avoid triggering the main volume level.

there is no “OpenSUSE” but there is an openSUSE 11.4, which is no longer
supported having gone past its end of life on 5 Nov 2012…therefore
there are no more security patches being sent out for 11.4 and you
should do one of these things:
- move to a supported version (12.1 or 12.2)
- move to openSUSE 11.4 Evergreen (see http://tinyurl.com/4aflkpy)
- use that system only when not exposed to networks with any potential
threat - generate all your own security patches

maybe the problem you encounter is related to your DE–that is, i’m
using 11.4 Evergreen and KDE 4.6.0 without your symptoms; but i am NOT
suggesting you should switch to KDE as i don’t actually think that
Gnome2 is the problem (but it could be)

hmmmm…that could be the problem right there!! i think in these forums
i’ve read several times to get VLC only from packman! and i know that
my 2.0.3 TwoFlower (2.0.2-93-g77aa89e) from packman’s source package
vlc-2.0.3-101.3 runs flawlessly here…
i do not know if you can download from packman for 11.4 without first
converting to Evergreen…but i GUESS the source you used is the root
of your problem…
> - And no, VLC has ALWAYS acted like this
i think because that source is known to be broken…
see

and dozens of others related…
Ok, thanks a lot man. Actually, i knew that 11.4 was about to reach the end of support, but i kinda missed that moment. Thanks for reminding me. Anyways, i can tell you for sure it has nothing to do with the updates and DE. So maybe you’re right actually, it could be the source, although something still makes me doubt about that one. The reason why i always prefer to use official VLC repo is because packman’s one tends to be kinda glitchy. For instance, it used to startup with delays, it wouldn’t support some formats etc… maybe now it’s better, i have no idea. Anyways, meanwhile i’ll switch to Evergreen. Thanks.

welcome, and suggest you delete vlc and then install the packman
version… (anyway, it works here…)
Guys, thanks a lot. You were right, it’s VLC from official repo, the one from packman is ok. Solved.

you are welcome!!
but i am only one guy (not guyS).
