VNC openSUSE -> Win XP

I am running openSUSE 11.0 with kde 3.5. I would like to take control of a Win XP Pro PC on my network. What program should I install on XP to make it a VNC server?
Thank you in advance.

My wife supports my mother’s WinXP and WinME remotely, a continent away, using VNC. I installed “tightvnc” on my mother’s PC’s WinXP and WinME boot partitions, and then my wife, when using openSUSE-10.3, will connect to my mother’s PC and display/control my mother’s MS-Windows desktop and train my mother on her PC.

Thank you for your answer. I am going to install it.

Thanks a lot! Downloading, installing and working in 10 minutes! Perfect!

Also keep in mind that most Linux distros come with ‘rdesktop’ which
does a great job of controlling via RDP. This is better for
server-based environments than spouses helping their mothers since
controlling will often blank out the receiver’s screen but it is an
option and RDP is typically faster than VNC.

Also keep FreeNX in mind… doesn’t come enabled by default like VNC
can but it does a good job too. Sounds like you have it working with
VNC though which is good considering its wide availability and
cross-platform/open nature.

Good luck.

A key thing here, which you note, is one is best to adopt the approach that is optimal for their application.

For Gian-Piero, in providing remote maintenance and support for my mother’s PC, I use vnc, nx and ssh.

My wife and I only use vnc for maintaining her Windows partitions. To my knowledge nx does not work for a Linux session taking over a Windows session (but the opposite works).

I typically use vnc, nx and ssh for maintaining her Linux partition.

Typically, if I am just updating her Linux (openSUSE) software, I will use only ssh, as ascii based updates work well. If I want to configure aspects on her openSUSE that require graphics (and where she does not need to see what I wish to do) I will use nx, which is very fast and works very well. However if I wish to train her on openSUSE, I will use vnc (which is much slower), as she can see everything I do (with the way I have it setup).

There is other software that one can use for these sorts of activities. … I simply mentioned the ones I am familiar with.

Wholeheartedly agreed.

Good luck.

try RealVNC free edition http://http://www.realvnc.com/products/free/4.1/index.html

Ive always had good luck with their product.
however…free edition does not support encryption…
