VMWare Server

Hi there!
Could anybody install and configure VMWare server 2.0.0 (64bits) on openSuse 12.1 (64 bits)?
I get a lot of problems:

None of the pre-built vmmon modules for VMware Server is suitable for your
running kernel. Do you want this program to try to build the vmmon module for
your system (you need to have a C compiler installed on your system)? [yes] yes

Using compiler “/usr/bin/gcc”. Use environment variable CC to override.

Your kernel was built with “gcc” version “4.6.2”, while you are trying to use
“/usr/bin/gcc” version “4.6”. This configuration is not recommended and VMware
Server may crash if you’ll continue. Please try to use exactly same compiler as
one used for building your kernel. Do you want to go with compiler
“/usr/bin/gcc” version “4.6” anyway? [no] yes

What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your running
kernel? [/usr/src/linux/include]

The path “/usr/src/linux/include” is a kernel header file directory, but it
does not contain the file “linux/version.h” as expected. This can happen if
the kernel has never been built, or if you have invoked the “make mrproper”
command in your kernel directory. In any case, you may want to rebuild your
kernel.

Thank you in advance.

Hi Adrian,

Do you have specific reason(s) to use this old and abandoned product?

I have used it in the past and I’d have to say that it’s much better to find another virtualisation solution better suited for your current OS

OR

if you absolutely have to use it (VMWare server) use another (older - better suited) operating system for the host.

These are the good choices. Now the bad one.

If you insist on using VMWare server 2.0.x on fairly current linux distibution, google for Radu Cotescu and VMWare server and best of luck to you.
Been there - done that.

Cheers.

Nope, the last time it was updated was some time ago - VMware have
decided to push the free ESXi hypervisor instead.

I switched to using VirtualBox after having used VMWare for years - I
really like VBox, and would recommend it.

OK, guys!
I’ll try with VirtualBox.

Thank you, very much!

The company abandoned it. It was a good product. RIP.

But you can install vmware player, it is also free (of charge). Not as good
as the server version was, but close.

Thanks, a lot.

VMware Workstation will do the same thing as server used to.
There is a nominal charge of course, but you get a lot of nice
features. If you don’t go the VirtualBox
route, KVM is great alternative and is included in the Linux kernel
itself.

Does workstation now run headless? It didn’t used to (that was one of
the reasons I used server instead of workstation on one machine - and one
of the reasons I now prefer Virtualbox.)

Dunno, never tried to use it in that fashion. However, there are provisions
within the application now for connecting to remote servers and other copies
of Workstation are supported for remote connections.
