VMware Player 2.5.5 Install Fails -- Various Problems to finally MSG about KVM

I upgraded from Suse 11.4 to 21.3. I spent considerable time trying to figure out why Player was complaining about kernel (desktop) headers being missing. Once I dealt with that, it complained the “c” headers were missing.

Ok, after all of that I checked with VMware to find that I probably needed to jump from 4.x of Player to the current 2.5.5 (actually this is **VMware Player 2.5.5 **Latest Version: 2.5.5 | 2010/12/02 | Build: 328052). I first tried the .rpm version and got tired of the problems with it and got the .bundle. The GUI based install just falls over and I just could not find any error messages or a log file.

I changed to --console to find that it says the following:

"Extracting VMware Installer…done.
The product is ready to be installed. Press enter to begin
installation or Ctrl-C to cancel.

You cannot install on a system with KVM enabled."

>> To me KVM refers to a switch where I can switch mouse/keyboard/display between two or more systems. I’m not doing that. <<

I’ve gotten into Yast and uninstalled anything to do with KVM. No joy.

I’ve looked at /etc/vmware* folders and I just don’t see anything that means anything to me.

I’ve spent time over in the VMware web pages and no joy there. I downloaded their PDF for VMware Player and I just don’t see this problem hinted at. I have searched all the threads in this area (Visualization) and have not found anything that matches this last thing I’ve hit.

So, can anyone give me some idea as to what I’ve missed?

Hi
There is no way 2.5.5 would compile with the current kernels…

You need version 5.x
https://my.vmware.com/web/vmware/free#desktop_end_user_computing/vmware_player/5_0

kvm is kernel-based virtual machine…

Thank you.

I kept wondering why the VMware page I was on was telling me that this was Player 5 (built on Workstation 9) –
VMware-Player-2.5.5-328052.x86_64.bundle

And I don’t recall doing anything special going to their web site that would point me to a back level like this.

Again, thank you. I’ve gotten this install to start running…

How?

The current last stable version is 12.3, and the current beta is 13.1.
How could you install 21.3, did you travel to the future? I can not give
you help with that release. >:-)

You have a problem with versions, that one is obsolete. Current version is:

cer@Telcontar:~> vmplayer --version
VMware Player 5.0.2 build-1031769
cer@Telcontar:~>

You have a futuristic openSUSE version, then an obsolete vmplayer
version… no way that can work! >:-)

@Carlos E. R.:

dyslexia + finger check = 21.3. I am actually running OPEN SUSE 12.3.

To all, getting the current VMware Player (5.0.2) fixed the problems.

I have it installed and it is running just fine. Picked up the old config files and started the guest exactly where it had been when I suspended it.

Now, it is you who did not see the smileys. I was kidding him.

Sigh… :-/

You mean things like >:-)? They are not seen as smileys, but as stumbling over the keyboard.

Also the OP had alread said he was satisfied and thanked for the help. Thus completly superfluous post imho. Specialy as what you apparently offer as “help” is marked by you in the next line as not functioning because the OP has the wrong openSUSE version.

They are standard text smileys all over internet. If you don’t recognize
them, it is not my fault nor my problem.
