VMplayer won't run

Opensuse 12.3. I can’t get it to install. Any instructions that will work will be most appreciated? Thanks in advance.

“Can’t get it to install” doesn’t really tell us much. What are you
trying, and what happens when you try it? Run it from a command prompt
and post the output in code tags (# button in the advanced message
editor).

Did you add the kernel source, make, gcc before installing. I believe they are required

Yes, Make and GCC are installed.

Are you getting errors on the compile?

Looks like you may be missing the kernel source files.

kernel source files are installed.

You said that it’s vmplayer (and that’s the command you’re running), but
the log says it’s VMware Workstation - can you clarify which you have
installed?

VMPlayer. I don’t know why the log is showing workstation.

Itt may be bit late and several people (showing VMplayer knowledge) seem to have found your thread, buut wouldn’t it have been better when you had started this in the Virtualisation forum?

That is the place where people with Virtualisation problems and those with possible solutions are supposed to meet and to find also solved problems.

The first run of the downloaded install bundle has to be run as root.
Then at the moment it wants you to open or create a virtual machine, you
exit, and then run vmplayer as plain user instead.

This is because the first run has to compile, install, and start services.

vmplayer almost does not write anything to the terminal.

Later on you simply start the “vmware” service as root, which is done
normally on boot by default (I disable it, and run it manually only when
needed).

Do you have the ability to move it?

Everything was installed as root. Vmplayer doesn’t run logged in as root too.

Yes, I can.

This thread is CLOSED for the moment and will be moved to Virtuallization.

Moved from Applications and open again.

I have installed the Vmplayer.

Open Yast and check if you’ve installed:

  • vmware-guest-kmp-desktop
  • xf86-input-vmmouse
  • xf86-video-vmware

After installing, restart Vmplayer.

The GUI is giving me this message when I try to open Vmplayer

Cannot execute command ’ ‘’'‘/usr/bin/vmware-modconfig’'’ --icon=‘'‘vmware-player’'’ --appname=‘'‘VMware’'’‘’.

Strange.
Are you starting it from a terminal in the GUI?
The message doesn’t give much info to go by…

Hi
I suggest you uninstall the vmware-player bundle and re-install, I use
custom to decline the update and sending data the rest are the defaults;

sh VMware-Player-5.0.2-1031769.x86_64.bundle -u vmware-player
