VMplayer and No USB?

Hello,

I have used OpenSUSE 11.2 and VMplayer successfully in the past with no issues…
I have been having a heck of a time and gave up on OpenSUSE 12.1 (kernel headers issue) and converted an older pc to 11.4.
Installed VMPlayer & windows xp (guest)…successfully

Now I cannot get something as basic as a usb flash drive to work (on the guest os it doesn’t show up at all):

Host OS = OpenSUSE 11.4
VMPlayer 3.1.5
Guest OS = Win XP SP3

OpenSUSE:
Runlevel Services in Expert Mode for VMWARE are set to 5 only

Vmware Player:
Virtual Machine Settings:
Hardware Tab: USB Controller = Present
Connections [Selected]:
Enable High Speed support for USB2.0
Automatically connect new usb devices
show all usb input devices

Guest OS:
When I Connect a usb flash drive: the icon appears ok and shows option to disconnect (Connect to host), when I go into my computer there is no flash drive attached:
If I go to DEVICE MANAGER I see a question mark OTHER DEVICES: Universal Serial Bus (USB) controller… (I would guess this is the problem). I have tried to re-install vm tools

Any suggestions?

regards and thanks for your time

Have you tried with several different flash drives?

I have a device that is not seen at all by XP as guest.

Yes,
one is a sandisk and the other is some generic no-name… same for both

Then try creating another virtual machine with a version of Linux. If it
works there, it is a Windows problem. If not, it is some interaction
between vmware and the host.
