VMPlayer 3.1.3 OpenSUSE 11.3 Guest OS Access Shared Folders on WinXP Host Machine

Hi,

I’m a Windows person and will soon be tasked with UNIX/LINUX projects. I’m trying to learn as much as possible in a very short period of time. So please excuse this newbie.

I’m very familiar with VMPlayer and VirtualBox. Recently I installed OpenSUSE 11.3 as a guest OS on VMPlayer (bridged network). The host is WinXP. I have also enabled shared folder to the host @ C:\Repository\Installs.

Question - How do I access the shared folder from OpenSUSE (the guest OS) and vice-versa?

Any help will be appreciated.

For me the easiest way is to enable sshd on openSUSE and use WinSCP from WinXP to acces the guest machine filesystem. You can of course copy files back and fourth using this method.

You can also try samba. You need smb client to connect to windows file shares on WinXP or You need to set up smb server on openSUSE in order to connect to it from WinXP using the standard windows file sharing methods.

Agree with glistwan.

I haven’t seen it mentioned anywhere, but it’s required regardless whether you’ve created a regular Windows Share or a VMware Shared Folder.

But, it’s often more trouble than it’s worth (IMO) and I also use WinSCP (or SCP) to transfer files, sometimes SSH using Putty.
